Im gonna paddle to the mouth of the harbor tomorrow and then I'll make my final decision whether or not Im gonna go out and drop traps.  I dont want to get in any trouble out there in too big of swells.  Anything bigger than Saturday I'm not sure I feel comfortable with.  I hope thats ok with you Laguna.  I do know that I feel more comfortable battling swells during the day than at night!

No problem. I'll be doing the same.  It looks like it's gonna be bigger than Saturday, but the wind will be down.

chaeki, I think tide tables are more important when paddling inside the bay.  Out in open water tides are less of a factor.  This is what you really want to look at:

We had 8' swells on Saturday, and I think the winds were 10mph.  Looks like 10' swells for Tuesday, but the wind is down to 5mph.

it shows how much a newbie I am... (drowning in the ocean, because of it) lol

I don't know if its gonna happen fellas.  Those are going to be some pretty big swells out there.  Bigger than Saturday... I don't know if this is a good idea.  I may just wait and see what the swells look like for the weekend or next week.  I didn't notice much wind waves Saturday, it was just the swell that was big, and if its gonna be bigger, I dont think we should attempt it.  What do you think Laguna?

Chaeki, I thought you wanted to go Thursday, sorry, I didnt realize you were down for tomorrow.  I didnt mean to exclude you by not asking your opinion, I thought it was just Laguna and myself.  I dont want to deter anyone, I just think for me personally, 10' swells is too much.  Laguna?

Be careful out there guys.  Tuesday to Thurs looks bad even for small boats.  Looks like Friday is better for kayaking.

Yeah, I guess we will have to wait till next week...I'm also concerned with the weather turning worse while the traps are soaking and not being able to retrieve our traps, or have them "walk".

Yeah, probably not the greatest idea to go out in 10' swells.  Forecast can change pretty dramatically though, so I'll keep checking and let you guys know if it starts to clear up.

Hmmm, I just checked, and it looks like the swell is down to 8'.  I guess I'm still on the fence.  I'm going to check the forecast in the morning before I make a final decision.  You guys can call me in the morning if you still want to go.

I ended up going out.  Pretty much the same conditions as Saturday. I loaded up on ginger tea and Bonine before I went so I didn't get too queasy.

Also, I noticed there's an area just outside the jaws, along the jetty that looked somewhat protected from the surf.  There was another guy out there on a red yak.  Anyone here?  I waved to you on the way in.

I ended up going out.
Well my man, how did you end up doing?  I hope you easily got your limit cause you deserve it for putting up with swells like that.  Way to get out there!

So I went out yesterday just to drop traps then I went out again today to pull them up.
I learned a lot today.
  • I'm pretty sure some A-hole harvested my traps this morning :smt013.  In fact I think I saw it happening when I was driving in.  Someone in an aluminum boat was hanging around about 300 yds outside the harbor, just about where my traps were.  He was gone by the time I paddled out.
First trap was empty except for exactly one keeper dungie.  Jar full of squid pieces intact, bones of two chicken legs zip-tied to the bottom, stripped clean.
Second trap was the same except the bones were gone.
Third trap was empty except for two keeper dungies.
I rebaited the traps and I'll go out again tomorrow but I'm going at o'dark thirty in the morning.
  • Swell was even bigger today, but the wind is the real killer.  I wasn't sure if I wanted to go outside the harbor because paddling in the harbor was miserable.  The winds were howling.  Strangely enough when I did take a peek outside, paddling was much easier.  Swell was about 10ft but totally manageable and it seems like the peaks actually protect you from the wind.  If the wind outside the harbor was as bad as inside the harbor I'd have turned back and wouldn't have even bothered with the traps.
I considered going out again in the afternoon but noaa says the winds are getting worse.  It was 17kts when I went out, increasing to 25 kts in the afternoon.
