Is anyone thinking about it? Those waves look big right now... or is that normal down there?

Swell size and direction can affect anywhere, in these parts and SWS, we are exposed to SW and NW swells. Right now everywhere is on the entire Cali coast is experiencing the effects of the large storms in the gulf of Alaska spinning up and sending massive water and waves our way.

I am going to be down there on the 15th, as long as the conditions permit. I have always wanted to see that place with a large swell on it, rumors indicate that is a big wave break and of course Ghost Trees in with a mile or two of the cove, and that is known by many and has also taken lives of experienced an waterman recently.

Post up as we get close to the last days and I'm sure others will join in. Safety and water knowledge is always primary to what we do and how we operate-especially this time of year.

Cheers

Mike, the past two weekends I have seen some BIG swells rolling through there, and there was a large curling break up at the point...there were also steep faces in that shallow section between the island and the shore...had to work my way up close to the island and then time the sets to sneak through over into the other part of the cove!!

Cool thing was though all that water coming in seemed to have knocked down the thick kelp and washed out any murky water and left the visibility in great shape!!

I will be home in New Orleans that weekend so won't be able to make it, but I hear rumor that there will be some serious A-hulls down there so watch out!!

Good luck to all and I look forward to reading the reports!!

Kurt I have a wedding to attend that Saturday but I'm gunning for a chance the 14th or 15th if the wx is good. Sws is the target.

A newbie's question: Plan to be at SWS tomorrow 11/6. NOAA weather report below. Is this condition safe to be at SWS?

ENE wind 5 to 8 kt becoming WNW in the afternoon. A slight chance of showers. Mixed swell...WNW 8 ft at 13 seconds and SW 1 ft at 14 seconds. Wind waves 1 to 2 ft.

Careful out there, like BigJim said, it was big inside the cove. To the right of the pier, out to the wash rocks is a very shally rocky area that extends from the shore to the wash rocks. The swells came through fast and were good size. They were breaking on this really shallow area I described. Out to the far right of the cove, below the big pink house the swells were running deep into the cove, but parallel with the beach, and breaking there too in like 15' of water, as well as hitting the beach directly.

We had fun, but beware of the shallow strip i mention.

The water was a forecasted for a bit more the day we were there. Just givin ya heads up, report back.

Decided to go to Monterey Bay instead. Met with John and his girl friend (who caught a ling at MBK three weeks ago) OTW. RF was slow. But lings seemed to be active. Broke my line two times. The first time was near the jetty and I was fishing with a swim bait. The second time was around the kelp bed near the aquarium using a baby rock fish (caught earlier) as bait. I did try to be very careful the second time after the first was hooked but it was so strong that after fighting the fish for about 10 minutes (I use light gear) I suspect the drag on my reel got stuck and the line broke again. Went home empty handed but it was a good trip out there.

The current WX for next weekend might be barely doable.  I am currently thinking about going down there on Sunday the 14th.

still eying sunday...will have the stuff in the car but may not end up going depending on wx.

Saturday: NNE wind 5 to 8 kt becoming NW in the afternoon. Sunny. Mixed swell...NW 9 to 10 ft and S 1 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.

no sunday forecast quite yet. at 9 to 10ft i'll probably think of something else like sucky cruz or crapitola.
