and here is a quote from the web site on the MLPA
QUOTE from Karen Brooks.
My Ideas:

Repeal MLPA - The MLPA has done nothing but diminish California's sustainable fishing industry and once enacted it will have devastating affects on the fishing families struggling to survive in the first district. These regulations are intended to be the savior of our marine life from overfishing at a minimal cost to the state and promises to revive our fishing economy. California is one of the least exploited marine areas in the world which already has seasons, extreme weather, marine perserves, limits and fish management plans, why is this even necessary? New Zealand has seen the light after implementing MLPA in their country and they are now opting out. When unscientific regulations shut down the ability of our fishing communities to responsibly use a resource we lose well paying jobs and the state loses the tax revenue while it costs the state millions of dollars to enforce. No wonder the state is broke! Sound scientific evidence must be present before common sense solutions to a “so called problem are enacted by government. I will work to bring groups together in an attempt to repeal or suspend this economically harmful and unnecessary law.
Sustainable Forests - Bring back our logging industry. California is attempting to remove almost every industry from the state and completing the goal of some who seek a welfare state and no economic growth. Logging used to be a primary economic driver of this regional economy, but no longer. Logging companies are eager to reopen their mills, but are fearful of environmentalists seeking to shut them down with expensive lawsuits or government regulation. We need to partner with this industry to ensure they remain good stewards of the environment and return them to their status of being an economic driver of this region. I want to create a working group that will bring all the stakeholders together in order to reopen these mills, while protecting our sacred redwoods from excess logging. We can bring an industry, and jobs, back to this region but me must act now.
Water - The first district is a water reservoir for the state and we must protect fish as well as provide water for agriculture, business and residents. The Klamath River basin and Trinity Lake are two major sources of fresh water, which has become a political football. Many of the water debates have nothing to do with our waterways, but more with lawsuits and environmental activism that have halted agreements to provide water to the Central Valley farmers. California needs a water policy that does not focus on conservation only. Conservation only prolongs the inevitable. A sustainable water policy includes, surface water storage, conservation and new water delivery systems for the state. It is time the state seriously looks at desalinization plants as a viable strategy to relieve our water woes.

Just thought I would raise the question and get the discussion going.

I don't know Karen Brooks, but looking at the info:

Huh? . . .What companies (specifics are in order) does this refer to? Are they local, regional or offshore? I know a few Foresters, there are other issues here and the housing/building slump does not make this renewal any type of attractive business venture IMO. Does this mean the Fir and/or Redwood lumber prices support this expansion? Not from what I see/hear. - Opinions?
