I've been going out of Cabrillo Beach here in SoCal EVERY WEEK, but I quit making posts because they were all the same. Windy most of the time and I usually catch & release from one to three short halibut.  I've become a master at catching short halibut here at Cabrillo Beach on the inside, using various colors of scampi.   :smt009 They tell me that, statistically, I'm bound to catch a big one soon. (yeah, ok.):smt002

But it's all good, and I'm learning quite a bit.  I've tried to make bait with a sabiki rig to no avail, gonna try it again, next time near the fishing pier and chumming with a little "bread" as recommended by a guy today in the "tube".

Today I caught a short Halibut (released) and a California Skate today, on the green scampi.   I took some pix, but not of the fish.  The green kayak at the ramp belongs to "Heather" -- I posted some pix of her back in August and it caused some notice on this board.   I ran into her and her husband again today, got a picture of her boat -- but did not take her picture this time. The man fishing in the "tube" had just made bait at the fishing pier and told me how he did it, so I will try that at the fishing pier.   I spent some time way out on the inside of the federal breakwater ... but nothing was going on.  I saw LOTS of sea urchins on the wall though. (very low tide).  I seem to get most bites pretty close to the boat ramp in 4-8' of water.

So even if I'm not catching huge fish, I am going out every week -- twice this week -- and lovin' it.     I may be up in the bay area to see my daughter will take the hobie, and will probably get up to Eureka again to see the other daughter and will bring the yak up there again too.

One of these days a legal halibut will jump on my line ... but it was not today.

Are you tipping the scampi with squid?  or any attractant?

@ hamachijohn --- no, I've not put anything on the scampi, except once -- on my lighter rig I caught a herring (we call em brown bait on the party boats.) -- so I nose hooked that on a larger scampi and fished it.  If there was a taker, I missed it.  It came off.  I've thought about putting a little cut squid on the scampi but so far have not tried it.  I've done that on the party boats in the past with some success.  Will try it.

I scoped out the launch at King Harbor.  It looks easy, and in my conversation with others I've learned there is a reef not far out that is marked with a buoy.  One day when I can "buddy up" with others who have done it, I will try that out.  Meanwhile, I will try a launch over there and fish inside the harbor -- and check things out.

I tend to go to Cabrillo frequently because it's blocks from my house and I am usually squeezing in a quick afternoon run.
