Any of you brothers ever fished that area before??? Any advice is helpful since I will be totally new to that area.

I've only spent time in the Baja area of Mexico and I know that place like the back of my hand. Heard this place is like a whole different world compared to Baja.

I am heading down there October 27th and staying till Nov 5th. I will be bring along my inshore rods, fly fishing gear, tackle, & camping gear. Flying into Cancun renting a Jeep and heading down the coast. Can't wait to getting into some bone & permit fishing in the salt flats/mangrove areas in Sian Ka'an.

I have Been there three times out of Cancun to fish the mangroves. I used Worldwide sportsmen and a guide named Carlos Vega. I did not fish any fly tackle cause I am not that good but I have done some spinning and bait casting using plugs, spooks and what not. For the bone fish we use a small wobble jig with feathers in the sand. For snook in the mangroves we would use shallow diving crank baits and swimbaits. Cast into the mangroves pockets and  be ready to crank them out. Take some 5 inch Zara spooks and play with the Barracudas make sure you use wire to hang them on for open water fun. I don't know the exact area we were fishing. Its south of Cancun about 30 to 40 minute in a jeep thru some jungle and another 20 to 30 minute boat ride. I did notice the tarpon that I have seen are small compared to Florida's tarpon. But the snook were awesume. If you are look for something to eat there are a lot of snappers. You sometimes never know what you are going to pull out of the ocean there but fishing mangroves is a blast.

Good luck
Kevin

Hey Ariel,

back in 93, I rode my bike down that entire peninsula for 3 months,

the plan was to not come back,,,  did not work...  :smt011

anyhoo,

I tossed many a castmaster from the shore for many different species, then inevitably, something huge would hit and rip me into the coral...

I was shore bound at this time...  I also learned from the locals to smash snails and use them for bait...

  very effective...

also...on another note... shore is very volcanic rock as you get past palya del carmen... shore access in the middle of no where is probably not worth your time, as ya have to go 5 to 8 miles off the main road to check out the shore.

Once ya get past Tulume though... the road is right along the beach and all kinds of good things happening, but it is a preserve, not sure about the fishing...

another note Casa Cenote', about 15k before?  :smt012, I think  it's above Akumal,  should be a great restaurant and and Great Cenote that flows back into the mangroves... Really Kool,

I have not been back there since then and can only imagine the build up...

I would also bring lots of golden seal powder...

I brought these in pill form to help with dietary problems should they arise,  but where it really came into play was the Fire Coral cuts I received wading into the water and snorkeling...

I figured it was a miracle powder so i made a paste of of it and put it on the open wounds that would not heal... instant relief and healed up in 2 days...

started repairing all the ex-patriot Texans down there...

PM me if ya want more....

Kevin & Don

Great advise from the both of you very much appreciated. I've been reading reports and info about the general location for the past couple of weeks now. About one more week to go before I leave and the excitement is break through the roof.

Very excited about the mangrove fishing and targeting the species that dwell in those areas especially the snooks.

I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures and hopefully video of all the action.

Don thanks for the advice on the medications. I know I will be probably need something like that since I hurt and scratch myself up all the time.

This will be my first real vacation in the past 3 years. Treat to myself since I've been working my butt off.

Chartered boats out of Puerto Aventuras 5 or 6 times over the years. Pricey way to go though. Huge Dorado, lots of Baracuda and smallish Sailfish.

Akumal is awesome. And yes, it is all quite built up now. At least Playa anyway :smt010

I'm jealous! Was there a few years ago - totally cool place.

Fished Pangas out there a couple of times, we caught all kinds of fish, huge barracuda, nice dorado, spanish mackerel, ladyfish etc.

Saw a marlin boat swamp while backing down on a big blue :smt010

Also went out on a flats boat at Boca Paila and caught some small bonefish on fly rods, that's some world class fly fishing down there, and the guides are great, they really know the waters.

Saw some big Jacks landed by bait guys using small crabs.

There were schools of 2-3lb bonefish and ladyfish in the harbor - swimming practically around my legs, as I didn't have a fishing pole w/me.

Fished off the beach in back of our NICE rented house for some smallish reef fish.

House came with 2 SOT's so we went out for a couple of kayak fishing tries - once at night for nada.

Check out the cenotes, it's cool to snorkel in them.

PM me and I can send more info.

Wow Ariel, that sounds like a great adventure!
I don't have any fishing info but...

Don is right on with this tidbit. I've used a paste of G olden Seal powder for all kinds of minor cuts on me & my dog. It really works well. My dog had a noseleather injury that festered for a week. Neosporin etc did nothing for it. I finally made up a GS paste & the cut healed right up, in 3 days it was gone completely.
