Read the full story- you may be, as I am, sorry for that fellow and his family.

Not really comparable to poaching abs in Norcal. Take a minute.
Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

I don't wish he died, Now his family is really screwed! He could have only been wounded and his partners in crime just left him for bait. You lie down with dogs and you will get fleas.

I'm sure poverty in South Africa is nothing like poverty here.  I don't know if you have a family Matt but I do, if there was no work and my family was starving I guarantee you the that the legality of snail take and sale wouldn't cross my mind for a second.......my family would eat and I'd sleep soundly each night.

Our poachers here are criminals that have no respect for our game or the sportsmen that play by the rules. They aren't driving from the Bay area to Mendocino to get a bite for their family. They are just criminals.

People in third world countries will deplete a resource until it is extint but in a place where your family is starving there isn't much of an alternative. I've lived in a poverty stricken nation and visited others. Parents actually watch their children die from starvation. I play by the rules and follow f/G laws but I would feed the last abalone in the world to my kids if they were starving.

When I heard that a poacher had been munched by a shark my first thought was "good" because I imagined it was some California jackass just stealing our resources. It changed my perspective when I read the story. For the record I am all for sharks eating sea lions and non starving poachers.

Everybody dies, not everybody lives. What did you do today?

Poverty is something not easily understood unless you have lived it. I have not and therefore it is often hard for me to understand, and still is even after a dad at a school where I was teaching 20 years ago came to school late to pick up his daughter with bloody arms. I asked him was he alright. He confessed he was poaching a deer to feed his family. This same single dad with a low IQ could barely take care of his son and daughter. She would come to school with dirty clothes and a often handful of dried rice or bread for breakfast. I would ask our kitchen manager always for food for her and the brother. Social services in the area did not care a rat's azz. The sad ending to the story is I attended her funeral the next year. She was struck by a car walking to school. Dam I loved that kid and yes poverty sucks! We never know unless you walk in someone's else shoes. I do know my father came from poverty and he work his back side off to ensure his children went to college to have a better chance than he did. He is a honest man and never stole from anyone, even would take the shirt off his back to help others. The fact is the man who poached is dead, probably had a family and now those children and wife are without dad.  :smt010

What I have copied of your post just struck me as the epitome of hypocrisy.  Didn't you recently get a ticket for high grading?  So the dead guy deserves death because he broke the law...how about you?

He was doing it to feed his family.  What were you doing it for?
