I put in the water at Shadow Cliffs at about 11am, the weather was cool sunny one minute and cloudy another. Just a little bit of wind. So since I had never trolled for trout, I started by paddling hard and cast my line on the side. I then picked up speed and started skirting the banks of the lake.
I paddled around the lake a couple of times and nothing happened. Nobody around seemed to get any bites. Just heard some kids on shore scream and yell about some trout they had lost.
While paddling I met another paddling angler (Hoho), we had a nice chat, talked about fishing, spearfishing etc...
I then went across the lake back and forth, caught some weed and returned to the south west side along the shore. I tried to troll along the 24' depth line (I have a hand-held depth guage). Then as I got to the end of the lake (narrow end), I wanted to stop trolling and just cast while drifting.
As I reeled the line back in I felt something pulling and I thought it was more weed. Then a few jerks and I knew I had something!
Awwwwright, I had caught my first trout while kayak fishing! See the pics.
Hey Mooch, again thanks much for all the tips......

That looks like an interesting little lake.

What did you catch the trout on?

Are there bass in that lake?

Mmm Purina Bass Chow sized trout!

Time to bust out the swimbaits.

hey great work alain! you are the first to post trout caught from the kayak in 2006 I think! (not counting
the yak-motor dude on fishsniffer). whatever lure and depth and speed you caught that little guy at
you should be able catch more of the same while trolling, right? trolling is just a very long retrieve!

I surfed this weekend, stared at lexington as I drove by, it's still muddy, but I also read that guys caught trout
on trolled white grubs in muddy water recently at another lake, so I'm set to give it a shot this wednesday.

If you do Lexington, keep an eye up for an Osprey!  I've seen one there many times.    When the waters clear, looping by the dam has always landed me trout.   Now that the water is in the trees again, Bass is going to be nice!  Rarly get skunked working the trees below the road to the dam.

Wind on Lexington usually picks up after noon, 1 O'clock  time frame, but in the AM, it can be glassy smooth!
The past rains we had, filled the lake pretty much over night!  (ok 2 nights worth) Before seeing it topped off, last time I saw the water line it was 7' maybe 8' down.  One tree out from the bank by it's self was high and dry (water below it by 6 feet easy) now, (after the storms ) it's surrounded by water!

Fisn'N'Dive,  Great job landing your first when no one else was!

Ohhhh can't wait......

Hey, Just want to pass along the info. I lauched my kayak in lexington this Sunday 10:30AM. I took my kid out for paddling. Weather was perfect ( no wind, sunny and warm). My fish finder showed schools of fish around bank on the right side of the launch ramp, the cove on the left at 20-30ft deep. However, they did not strike. I used spinnerbait, Storm and kastmaster, but no luck. Water is still muddy. It was fun to paddle around.

What is yak-motor thing? Can you attach a motor to kayak? just curious ...

Here is some more detail guys:
My lure was a blue fox....I think I found this one underwater somewhere, it looked good so I kept it and used it while trolling.

I looked up the Blue Fox lures site but they don't seem to make this one anymore. I am sure you can find something equivalent like Rapala or apex.
I was trolling at a normal leisurely pace when I hooked this baby.

Alain, thanks for the report and pics. I'll be making a trip there sometime soon - I'll post it on the hook-up section.

Alain,

It was nice meeting you at Shadow Cliffs. Congrats on your 1st trout.  You got me far away in the background in your first picture up there.   Shadow Cliffs is a nice peaceful lake to fish.  They stock some thunder trout (silver color) there around April May and some of them are pretty big.  There are some big bass and catfish in that lake, but they are hard to catch.  You can see some of the pictures on the bulletin board by the restrooms.

Herny, for catfish - try drifting across the swim area with a 3 -way swivel set up and use 3 lively nightcrawlers. The catfish are tucked in the thick weeds - the 3 way swivel is perfect for that cause the weight on the bottom of the 3 way will brush up against the weeds and alert the cats, they come out of the weed beds and will go for the nightcrawlers that suspending. I used this method back in my float tubing days and slayed them. I also caught 'em in the middle of the day.

Mooch, I really like your picture.  It's so visual.  I definitely will give that a try.
