Dove PG solo today. I launched at Coral Street, and dove in about 10-30 FOW. Saw some perch, and that was about it (for that spot). Viz was around 15 feet.

I paddled towards Otter Cove, and I decided to try diving shallow (10-15 feet). My first dive, I checked some holes, but still, nothing but perch and some small rockfish.

Finally, I came accross the biggest grass rockfish I have ever seen ,maybe just water magnification, but the thing was enormous. But before I could close enough for a shot, it ducked into a cave. I went up for air, and went back down to the same hole. No grassie (must've went out the back door  :smt013 ), but low and behold, a cabbie was sitting in there. Lined up my polespear and BAM! Got him. He measured out at 15".

I hunted around looking for more caves, and eventually returned to the first cave, where I found a bigger cabbie. He measured out to 17", and was pretty fat. I eventually got yet another fish from that cave, a 10" black and yellow.

Saw a few other fish after that, mainly perch though. No lings today. I was impressed with the paralyzer tip on my pole spear, as none of the fish moved (besides a muscle spasm) after I shot them.

The cabs' colors faded a while after I shot them. The bigger one was bright red, and the smaller one was a dark purple color.

Sweet! I am not impressed by the way coral street has been in the past, maybe overfished? Otter cove seems to be producing more often now. Thanks for the report. Andy

I agree thrice....in addition to posting it on the net why don't we also put a sign down by the coral street entry that says "this spot is overfished.....everybody and their little brother should redirect all their efforts up the street at X spot...it will produce until everybody and their little brother overfishes it."

Great report - nice work on the taco meat.  Love the old-school wetsuit too - I learned in one just like it.   :smt001

Good job Rick! All you need now is two more lings and five more rockies for a full house. Try the baitbag sometime.

By "bait bag" do you mean chumming with ab guts or something like that? I have some ab guts in my freezer and thought about it, but I forgot to bring them.

WTG  Rick!!  Like I said when Rick came up this way for his first ab dive, he's gonna be dangerous by the time he's 20.

Rick, you can use a mesh bag with ab guts for cabs, or with lings, just hang your fish stringer low or on the bottom.  They like that blood smell.

Say hi to your Dad for me.

Cool! Thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to test them out next time I dive.

Good work on the fish! I remember when that place was very fish rich, not so much these days. Great for practice.
