Before Kayak Fishing, I was floating around in a float tube and I though that there no better way of “silent stalking”. The sit-on-top kayak changed all that. Realizing the birth of a better fishing platform that requires no gasoline, registration, trailer, insurance or launch ramps, I immediately invested on a sit-on-top kayak and I have never looked back.

Nice article.  This past July I was at Lake Huntington in the Sierras, and tried to fish from a kayak.  Seems that time of year the trout are way deep, and I was told a downrigger is required.  I tried dipsy divers and similar, but no love.

Looks like you did some paddlling for smallmouth as well.  I've heard there's smallmouth in Del Valle, but haven't seen much evidence.  Where was the picture taken?

Nice article Joel thanks. definitely looking forward to trolling in your shadow soon. Mike
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Dave - if the trout were really deep, I'd forget about the trolling and jig (with a heavy spoon or even livebait) instead. Again, just look for the deep edges and work the area before moving on to another.

The one thing good about my trolling method is that I get into the bass, crappie and bluegills as well. I've even caught a few catfish this way too. Sometimes I can feel that my rapala is hitting bottom and that's when I hook-up with some cats.

The pic was taken at Del Valle about 4 years ago. And they definitely have smallmouths - I've fished Del Valle enough and I've caught them at the same spots every time. Smallmouth LOVE rocks, boulders, gravel and that's what I look for. I've fished Folsom Lake a couple of years back and I found them on the rocks as well.

Thanks Mooch for the information,
I am going to try trolling tomorrow at Shadowcliff, I live close-by and I don't have striper or sturgeon fishing experience to join you guys at Buck's.
Hope to at least have fun on the lake. :blob7:

F&D - you would have been in good company if you decided to fish Buck's with this crew - experience is not a pre requisite when fishing with NCKA - just show up and you'll have a great time    :kick :kick

Anyway, good luck at Shadow Cliffs - look forward to your report!

F&D, If you're interested in striper or sturgeon fishing, this is the group to do it with. I just did my first day in the bay with this group and it was awesome. Even had a couple of guys wait when it took me a little longer to pull up my anchor for the trip in.
