My observations over the last few rockfish seasons are, when fishing with a pair of shrimp flies.....  Single fish seem to hit the bottom fly.  If I drop into a school I'll tend to hook up on either or both.  So, has anyone noticed if hook point up or hook point down makes any difference?  My initial guess would be that it matters more where the fish are. Rockfish aren't the brightest and tend to just inhale things in front of them.

Hmmm, I hadn't given it that much thought . . . When I add the SF as a second hook above a Curly Tail Grub it is tied hook up. As it is tied direct, I just figured it is easier to access for fish mouths than down and facing the line . . . .I might be doing it wrong!

How do you set the hook with the point down?? :smt013
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

Either direction works but downfacing gets hung up less.

Mike, my impression is Jacob meant either the hook point in towards the line (down) or away from the line (up) . . .  not meant as tied so the hook point is actually down.

That is what I meant indeed.  I tried both configurations today and I didn't notice a difference in hooking fish or other things.  Maybe it doesn't matter.

Got that I was just joshing, but I think you need to decide if you want to hook the fish in the upper or lower lip. I guess I clicked the wrong emotion :smt005

You all lost me, I need a diagram..........

either the hook point in towards the line (down) or away from the line (up) . . .

I guess I'm just too dense to visualize this one.......

Clearly I'll never make it as an artist but this is what I was asking about

Thanks, and your art is as good as mine for sure, and I never thought about it before.

but it does seem (or so it feels) like allot of fish grab the lure on the way down so maybe down facing for school fish like blacks or blues, and facing up for reds and lings?

Now that I understand the question, it's just too much for my old brain to think about,  :smt004

when i learned to make my own shrimp fly rig online, it said that the hook should be pointing up.  Didn't say why, so don't have any explanation.

It doesn't matter which way. The fly flopping and churning in the water doesn't stay in the same position, it's all over the place, so seems like a weird question to me.
