So me and my godfather decided to hookup for labor day and do some fishing! We decided to keep it local and hit Brannan Island near Rio vista for a shot at a salmon and/or stripers. GLad we did! Started out around 6:30 trolling for stripers and salmon and eventually made it out to the west bank on the sac where the action picked up! As soon we got to the west bank, there was stripers boiling all over up and down the bank! This looked promising. After about a 30min troll on west side, my godfathers pole starts screamin and first fish was on! Immediately after hooking the fish, it jumps out of the water and shows itself! Its a Salmon! Caught on a rebel too, can u believe that! After a short lil fight we get it boat side and nett the first salmon of the year! Took a few pics and we made a good decision of letting it go! Fish was about 8lbs more or less and chrome, a Nice lil fish. What a way to start the day! We get the lines back in the water and make a u turn and head back over the same spot. With 3 poles out and me setting the fourth out, i look up and see my pole rigged for salmon just get slammed! Ran over to pick it up and set the hook, but by then it was too late! I was trolling a wiggle wart on a 3way rig specially for salmon. And it hit in the same spot as well! Damn, oh well! We continued to troll up and down the west bank for a few more hours before anchoring and fish w/ bait! Caught about 7 lil stripers today on both shad and sardines but that was it for the rest of the day! was off the water by 300. 1 salmon, 1 missed takedown, and 7 lil stripers was our total tally for today! Dont know why we couldnt hook up any of the boiling stripers! there was a lot out there tho..Seen two salmon roll as well! A nice beautiful labor day.

Very nice pics, and that is cool to go out with your godfather. Nice!

I gotta say though-the poor salmon is getting pretty manhandled in those pics.
Not trying to be Captain Buzzkill & the Bringdowns here, but that fish probably won't make it. Once their slime gets smeared off and they get fingers in their gills they become extremely vulnerable. Keeping a salmon to be released in the water & out of the net is the best practice, IMHO.

Congrats on the by-catch! I wish I had that problem.

As Piscean was pointing out, careful with the ones that you are releasing. Should be handled like a trout even though they are much larger. A lot of fish die after release in the warm delta water because nets, hands and boat decks remove the protective slim and then they get infections and die before spawning.

edit: I assume that you trolling with barbed hooks and they were not allowed for salmon which provided motivation for the release. I have since looked over the regs and do not see barbless hooks as being a requirement this year. With that said : extra props for making the personal decision to release and I understand that sometimes you have to net and subdue a fish before you can effectively remove the hooks on a rebel.

I know nothing about good handling practices...there would have been a pinkie getting shoved into something, somewhere along the line.  :smt003
Good Job getting out there and trying = 1 less salmon aint gonna make it or break it = but i'm just a recently converted shoreline knucle-dragger. :smt001
