"Dave," the newbie with a hobie who lives near Cabrillo Beach. :smt006

I guess I will make a lot of Cabrillo reports.  I slept late, did not get on the water until about 1 pm.  Fished until 5 pm.   Caught three short Halibut.   I'm getting pretty good at short halibut.  I gotta figure out how to catch bigger halibut.  I caught them bouncing a white and later a green scampi on the bottom drifting in the afternoon wind.   The hobie does great in the wind.  I put at the boat ramp and then would drift with the wind bouncing the scampi on the bottom until I seemed pretty far out -- pedal back, drift again.

I ran into "Rene" who I'd seen a year ago when I was "demoing" kayaks.  She hooked a shaker while I was there so I took pix. [see below] I met  "Greg" (I think) from Baytubers as I was getting out and asked lots of newbie questions.  He was really nice.

I gotta figure out how to catch bigger halibut down here.  The white scampi was bigger and that fish was "closer" but not close enough.

More time on the water = more chances at the BIGUNS.  Besides, catching the shorts gives you more practice; for when you do get that !one!.  I went out today off of the ARW and got skunked (7am - 1pm).

Good report, db - keep trying and you'll get a legal fish, and keep the reports coming - I like the action shot sequence of Rene landing that fish.   :smt001

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.   :smt013

Today (9-10) I once again fished Cabrillo Beach on the inside (No pix this time, nothing worth photographing.)

I had to work this am but had the afternoon free. Cabrillo is so close to home.  I fished from 3:30 - 6:30 pm in the daily afternoon gale but the wind is not much of a problem in the hobie.  I've figured out how to put in at the boat ramp, drift out down the line of buoys until it seems "far enough" then slowly pedal back while fishing.

I keep catching short fish.  I realize that bait is likely the best way to go.  But I'm not rigged for it yet, so once again I bounced several different scampi sizes off the bottom.  The smaller green one works as does the "medium sized" white one.  The largest green one I have produced nothing. I had quite a bit of action and I caught two short halibuts (same size as on my last trips) and one  "brown bait" herring on the small scampi.  It was the PERFECT size for fishing calico's on the party boats but I didn't have any bait fishing gear (sliding sinkers or hooks) so I just nose-hooked it on the largest scampi and tried drifting that along the bottom.  Yes -- it got hit -- no I didn't catch it.  DARN!  :smt009

I figure I may be fishing in the nursery.  I probably should shift to a bait strategy for the next trips. Still - it was a beautiful afternoon, I had a great time fishing, and hopefully learned a little more.  Drifting small scampis = short halibuts.  Time to change strategies.  And I know there are keepers in here.  I remember those pretty pictures I posted two weeks ago.  She had a nice halibut.  http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,26162.0.html
