Agreed. I also think that we are just seeing more and more people venturing out to the ocean these days.

Really??  I hear the shark gurus and news reporters spouting the same thing but I don't believe that the number of people otw went up THAT much.  I think there's just more sharks in the water.

I would think so...look at NCKA, imagine how members are we getting these days (and that's not including the lurkers and non-ncka'ers that are out there kayak fishing)....and perhaps Spinal Tap and Fuzz can fill us in on how many more people are getting into spearfishing and abalone diving as well. And as far as surfers and SUP's, I'm sure their numbers are growing too. You also have swimmers, triathlon races, outrigger clubs and adventure racers in the mix.

I'm also sure that we are seeing more and more sharks now because of the fact that they have been protected for a long time now (just like our nemesis, the sea lions) and there's nothing that's feeding on them.

but that's just my opinion...

Yeah but most of the shark activity is occurring in the usual spots....spots that have had a ton of eyes on them day in and day out forever, regardless of how many new people are doing whatever new sports.  I think there's alot of sharks "coming of age" now and that is the predominant reason why we're seeing so much activity. I think the "more eyes" on the water theory is weak.

And this was justin aka seahunter (here and other boards), when I seen this story on spearboard I was tripping out, scary s**t for sure.  Glad he's okay.
