I am glad to read about your encounter from you rather than someone else having to write it.
Seems like the man upstairs is watching NCKA's back.

Is this the same Justin that went to the first Islander trip with us?

Anyway, glad he's OK. What an experience. Just yesterday I had a very scary discussion with Sharky about his Great White attack while he was surfing in South Africa....

Whoa, crazy, I was just talking about Great Whites while on my first blue water trip this last Wednesday out here in Maui when on our second pass at a buoy I got to have my first Galapagos Shark encounter.  Pretty scary, I did the same thing, but there was 3 of us there so I calmed down and it became ok, except for the fact that I had to keep charging the shark to keep him away.  He was full size near 10' long.

Glad your ok,  I know your encounter was way freakier than mine.  20' of vis is horrible to what I'm enjoying out here.  On another note, I saw your article in HSD with Greg.  Good stuff right there, your story was written better than most I've seen in that mag.  I bet that was gnarly goin in that cave full of blood.

Tell Greg & Vanessa the Rabitech Apex 130 they sold to me has been deadly out here.  :smt072 I'm gonna try to email them some pics when I get a new camera.

Peace out..  JTF..

Close call! Looks like he peeled off at the last fraction of a second once he got a good look at you. Maybe the spear freaked him. Reminded him of a ray or something.Glad your OK.

This year seems to be a little more active regarding shark encounters off our coast. It could be that there is a larger number of them coming in to spawn this year, or perhaps their regular food sources and patterns have changed and thus we are seeing them more due to a change in feeding habits. Either way, extra caution is definitely warranted.

Here is a link to an article regarding a few tagged fish that are back in the area:

Despite the fear and respect that these fish deserve, they are extremely fascinating to say the least.

Good Luck.

Agreed. I also think that we are just seeing more and more people venturing out to the ocean these days.

It's a scary thought that I (we) know at least half a dozen people or more that have had "incidents/sightings" with with White sharks within the last 10 years  :smt104
