break your ankle on the job and go on paid sick leave for 8 weeks

kayakers,
I broke my ankle doing what we all do often, standing on a steep slope and wrestling around something heavy.  in my case It was helping a co-worker up the hill (which we have all done many times).
I was facing down-slope for stability, grabbed his hand and gave him a pull as he hopped over a 3 foot straight wall onto the slope and hurried past me to the roadway above.  as he passed and I turned we both heard a very loud pop/crack and I collapsed in place...
aparently, as Roberto passed my location I attempted to swivel on my foot to follow, only, my foot did nbot swivel and I popped all the tendons on the outside of my ankle and ripping off a chunk of bone from the back of my tibia (shin bone).

From this I have learned:
  • ankles and rotational stress with greater than standard body weight applied vertically DO NOT MIX (such as helping a friend, hauling a gear box, hauling a kayak)
  • torn tendons in the ankle SUCK and the swelling takes forever to go down
  • spending all week with my foot elevated above my heart it terrible!
  • 5 month old kittens make the healing process better
  • a knee-roller is 1000x better than crutches for getting to the bathroom in under 20 minuets and the $35/week is worth every single penny

Pic of ankle after 4 days is below ...kinda gross... :smt002
well, I have to go, the in-laws are coming in today for a pre-scheduled visit...yay

Gah!  I feel your pain...15+ years ago I got a vertical tear in one of the tendons of my left ankle when someone fell on it during practice for a karate demonstration.  The ankle popped out of joint (and back in) with a snap loud enough to be heard 10 feet away. It sucked big time, and never really healed 100%.  So do your physical therapy when the time comes!  Wishing you a speedy recovery, and lots of kittens.

+ 6-7 more times. The hardest part is making it through the slow part of healing. You get what you give in Rehab. take your time, trust me I know. Heal well jim. Say hi to your better half for me.

Yeouch!!!
Never seen a blister from something like that.
Maybe some legs over the side of a yak in cold water is just the therapy you need...and deserve.
Heal well my friend.
