well with good intentions ChuckE and I were going to launch from Bullhead Flat (china camp), and fish for sturgeon off near Rat Rock.  With the rain, and the wind up we chickened out, and decided to shore fish off the rocks just above the launch.
Weren't there longer than half hour when I got THE classic pump.  Waited a bit, felt the second pump and set the hook.  Shortish fight, with one nice long run, and after chuck's masterful snaring had a 54" or so.  First sturgeon in over 20 years (gonna call my bro to ask him when he and I caught one last- I think it was even when i was still in high school). After a quick pic we let the little guy go...if you catch a legal sturgy with a missing fin....

Steve, you lucky dog!  Once again... I get skunked while the guy closest to me scores a nice dino.  That's the 3rd time in a row that's happened to me in the same area.

Here's a couple pics I took with my cell phone.  Sorry for the poor resolution.

gotta be quick around here, stole my line...  :smt013

here, let my try to cheer you up: chuck you make a phine photo beyotch!   :smt007 :smt005

the math of probability is sometimes nonintuitive.
if the chance of catching a sturgeon is 1/20, then no amount of not catching
a sturgeon increases your chances on the next trip at all. it's still 1/20. however the chance of
not catching a sturgeon in your next 100 trips is pretty small.  :smt003

and next you're gonna tell me that I can cut my sturgeon up in accordance with the Ham Sandwich Theorem

well, the truth is that taking pictures of the guy next to you catching fish is still a lot closer to
catching fish than being the third guy to post a jibe on the web,  :smt002.

that's what chuckE should say, but he's too nice, I'm sure.

but I can't pull punches on a guy who won a prowler for sturgeons's sake.

as for the ham sandwich theorem, don't get me started!  :smt009

congrats on your fish steves, I wish I knew even a fraction of what you know about
stripers, your posts this fall were amazing.

pardon my post, I've been chained to this machine for a few weeks. I have a new
kayak I don't know if it floats and I'm still in the wonderment stage of kayak fishing.

best,

J

Thanks guys.  I know my day will come... soon I hope.  The next best thing to catching one myself is seeing your buddies catch one.  Just witnessing the pump and seeing Steve set the hook, fight and land one from shore made my day.  It was well worth standing in the wind and pouring rain.

Steve, being the good friend he is, even christen the blue hooded paddling jacket I loaned him with sturgeon funk.  I'll refrain from washing it off in the hopes it'll bring me some luck the next time out.

Great catch!!  Chuck, the sturgeon karma gods are heading your way soon!   :smt001
Reports on coastside have been good and they seem to be catching sturgen througout the bay.

Its funny-- i feel like the mooch on this one-- "hey chuck, can ya lend me a weight?" "hey chuck, got your snare?" "hey chuck, got a rain jacket with a hood?" "hey chuck, got a camera?"
without chuck I would have been wet, bored, and would have had a hell of a time walking up to the car to get the snare with a fish on.

jmairey- i'm stuck in the office today- just a stone's throw from where we got that fish yesterday... and its killing me." And I don't know that much about stripers in the bay- CPKayak is the kayak master, yesterday we talked with the guy at westside marine- 400 stripers last year (1100 the year before).  Our question to him was "how do you keep track each day?" ChuckE and I both tend to lose count....

Dude chuck, that's grosser than the sisterhood of the traveling pants.  Nice teamwork and fish.

Steve!!!!!

Unbelievable!
Tell us what rig you were using, and bait.  Great pix. From the look of the water, you made the correct decision.  My hat is off to you guys for hanging in there and casting from shore.  Just goes to show you never know.  Kudos for the release as well.  Also, the mooch post was a riot!!

Respectfully and in awe,

Allen

Slider rig, 6oz weight, double 4/0 hooks- ghost shrimp loaded on both. Casted about 40 feet (no joke) from shore.
