Had a business lunch at Kokkari SF.  http://www.kokkari.com/home/

After seeing all the surf smelting pictures, I was curious to see how they tasted.  Ordered a starter plate of Marithes Tiganites ("crispy smelts with garlic-potato skordalia & lemon") for $9.50.  Dang was that good.  A bucket of these little guys would be a meal for 20 or so.  I can totally see the attraction... :smt007

Had dinner at a Japanese bar n grill in Santa Clara that was the equivalent of a tapas restaurant.  Name escapes me (like the food did LOL).  Anyway, we ordered a grilled fish dish, and it turned out to be individual smelt on a skewer!  OMG, I was ROFL.  One skewer per person.  Weird thing was that when I bit into mine, it was filled with eggs, like 90%.

There you have it, smelt on a skewer!

Martin:
that looks sooooo good.  Next time I go to Kokarri, will have to try it.  I wonder if there is a recipe online... will check.

Are you thinking of Gochi?  I think that place is hit & miss, depending on what you order.  I have  a large unfininshed bottle of liquor there under "Bae".  If you go, help yourself my friend.  I only drank 1/5 of it.   :smt002

I can never get enough of that stuff- shisamo, except it can get expensive b/c I can eat probably 20+ (actually, I've never ordered more than 2 orders, but it's so good with a cold beer)

Btw, you do any fishing, or just eat them?  See you OTW.

Gochi??  Not sure to be honest.  B/c of tiny portions, had to supplement food calories with Alcohol, so I cant remember much about the place    :chug Very true that it would take a Denny's-sized portion of shishamo to approach satiety.  Thing I don't get is how they're egg sacks take up so much room in the body cavity.  I mean, the whole lumen was literally jam packed with egg sack!

Haven't been OTW much this summer, but hopefully squeeze in a trip or two someday soon

Ranch 99 all you can scoop lunch here in Pleasanton serve those deep fried smelt with some garlic.  They are so good.  Sometimes that's all I put in my plate with rice and soy sauce.  Yummy!

The Japanese supermarkets in Japantown sell these fresh (fresh frozen?) in about 6 per package. We get them whenever we are in the nighborhood and do em up in the toaster oven. Still not cheap, but much more cost effective than getting them 1 at a time in a restaurant on a skewer.
Just a walleye fisherman from MN tryin' ta get salty!
