Honestly, this is probably more work than you want to go to, I know they sell gps mounts, but it kind of evolved it stages for me, so I didn't notice it much.
I used to mount it in a Scotty bracket, but I'm using that one for trolling rod holder now and didn't want to drill more holes in my yak.  1/2" pvc pipe wedges firmly but not too firmly in those Scotty bases.
My bifocaled eyes need the gps pretty close, and so I can pick it up to read the fine print sometimes, but a little protected from getting beat up by my pole and overactive fish.
If things get real rough, the mount will pop out but the gps lanyard is looped around the seat strap near the brass eye and won't go far.   You could probably mount something else this way, but you'd want to keep it small and cheap.   That's a 3" (inside diameter, almost 3 1/2" o.s. dia.) to 1 1/2" reducer, with a 1 1/2" to 1/2" reducer stuck inside it. Both are what are called "slip-slip" and I didn't glue anything.  I wrapped some vinyl tape around the bottom end of the big reducer so it fits snugly into the cup holder.  The 1/2" pvc pipe needs to be filed/sanded down a little to slip in, but not too tightly.  I cut and melted the pipe to get the flat area to drill holes into and  to sew with some heavy cord to an old plastic vitimin pill bottle that I carved up, sort of cutting out one side and some of the botto.  I put some padding behind the gps so the buttons would stick out the front, then sewed some Velcro straps onto the pill bottle to keep the gps in place.  Finally, I stuck some duct tape on the sharp edge , more as a fashion statement.     The gps goes in the pill bottle with the lanyard running out of the top of the upside down bottle  and over to be tied to the yak.
     It works fine for me.
I just tried twice to attach the photos and it says "Service not available" . Maybe I had too many flicks.  I'll try again with the pics tomorrow by replying to this.  Once you get the reducers jammed in the cupholder, you can imagine you could put anything you want on a piece of 1/2" pvc pipe  & mount it, if you're o.k. with it jarring loose now and then.

I'm using my forward cup holder in my OK Prowler 13' for holding my Hbird Sonar.

Slip 3" pvc into holder (prob 5' high) and top with flat end cap. Rectangle of acrylic is glued to endcap and sonar base mounts to acrylic/plexiglas.

It's very stable.

IMO:- anything you put on the deck space area in between your legs will get in the way - if you end up catching & landing a BIG fish......I try to keep this area free of obstructions for that reason alone. Just my 2 cents....

Good luck - hope it works out.

I agree wholeheartedly...and am not doing this.

Prowler 13s have two cupholders...one just in front of crotch and another at end where tip of my feet are. It is 99% completely out of the way.

I was not aware of that - works out for you then  :smt023

I think this is a workable solution because cupholder is far enough forward to not get in way...plus it is fairly "deep".

With 3"Wx4"L pvc slipped in it provides a fairly stable mount. I made sure to make height so it JUST clears top of cupholder...don't want anything too tall that would be "tippy".

As prior poster mentioned...with this PVC tube goop'd into cupholder there is minor chance that in extreme thrashing/roll of yak it is possible it may be dislodged...but I plan on some sort of strap/tie-down to tether it in.

To me it seemed cleanest spot to affix sonar. Otherwise I would've had to use small rectangular area above this cupholder...which isn't large enough for sonar mount. Would've had to build a 2-step base square on this or add a Hummingbird arm...which seemed to tippy/heavy and might place too much strain on this plastic.

IMO: this seems like a better way to carry a GPS - when kayak fishing - I'm not sure if it's water proof - but I'm sure there's a manufacturer out there that makes one.

I agree completely. For self-contained device like GPS...now you've got it close for readability and always handy. Easy to press buttons, etc.

yup - and more importantly, it's secured and out of the way.  :smt002 A "clutter free" deck makes life easier  :smt001

I think I like that leg holster thing better than my cupholder thing, in fact, I think I've saw that photo before a long time ago and forgot about it.  Would be a lot easier to make, too.

I think you would be best served going this route.

By the way...if you check google for "waterproof cases" you'll find a manuf who makes a "sport case" for gps...sport case comes with straps for arm or thigh.

Actually link is http://www.aquapac.net/

You <could> make something...but for GPS and other electronics I think you'd be best to put it in a waterproof case...especially at lower/deck level.
