No dino love again :smt010 although they were definitely there.  We saw at least half-a-dozen jumpers, including one that was less than 15 feet away from me :smt107

I caught a bunch of small leopards and JTF landed a big batray that was probably over 30 lbs.

We may try there again sometime this week.

What were you using for bait?  Is there a herring spawn happening in that neighborhood?  If so, herring fillet might be the ticket.

That's a lot of jumpers... you were definitely in the right spot.  Might be these storms that are coming through that are putting them off the bite.

We were using mostly ghost shrimp.  We also used anchovies and white shrimp.  It might have been good for us to try herring too... but I don't think there was any herring spawn going on there.  If there was, it was likely on the other side of the bay around Oyster Pt and the SF airport.

The recent rains have kicked up the activity around the OAK airport.  It now just a matter of time and luck to hook into one.

I posted this report before I saw Chucks so I deleted it and reposted it here, and also, nope, we caught nothing after you left chuck.  I metered alot of big fish in the channel close to shore and red got some bites but that was it.  We headed in about an hour after you.

Well, I tried to go to work the day after Christmas and everyone had taken it off.  Nice of them to let me know this.  So, I called a few people to recon conditions on the bay and out by the airport sounded the best.  I would have gone to bucks if I had known I wasn't gonna work.  So, I picked up bait at Mike's Bait in oakland and met up with Chuck and my buddy Redfish over near bayfarm ferry area but closer to Al Davis's office.   Chuck had whole white shrimp, I had ghost shrimp, and good ole Red brought chovies and herring.  It seemed the shrimp were the ticket yesterday and we caught lots of undersize leppies.  There were quite a few jumpers out there with one nice size sturgeon jumping 10 feet off chucks left side.  The sturgeon were all jumping in 6 to 8 feet of water.   The only substantial drag peeler was a 50 lb ray that did two pumps on my shrimp and jetted away.  Chuck reeled in and watched me battle the sucker while we all hoped it was a suicide sturgeon.  I knew it was a batray from previous experiences with those  suckers.  It seems when the water is colder and muddier they pick the bait up alot slower almost resembling  a sturgeons bite.  We fished it 6 hours and called it a day.  Johnthefisherman..

Chuck,
Can you post next fishing trip prior to your departure, so that others can follow around?  Thanks.

We may hit it Monday the 2nd.  Chuck was supposed to post the hookup but forgot.  It was last minute as I hadn't even planned on getting out on the water.  For Chuck and I, that spot is 15 minute accesible which is A-Ok.  The paddle out is even better,,, 5 minutes and drop anchor. :smt002  So, just know this, we had casually planned on hitting martinez marina on monday the 2nd but will know better of weather conditions on sunday night and will post it then.  Have a happy New Year and check the hookups section sunday night.  JTF..

Would you guys mind giving me the details on the Oakland Airport fishing. Where do you launch? Where do you fish? Etc. I live in Oakland, up on the hill above the airport. I know there is a launch site at the end of the estuary. Is that where your launching? Details please so I can join you guys out there.

Thanks
Dave

That beach in the first pic is known as Espiritu Beach.  Lots of girls go there in the winter time and sit on the concrete wall to wait for kayak fishers to come in and share their stories and catch. :love1: :fishing1

Any tips for the kinds of tackle and bait you need to land sturgeon?
Thanks,

Here's an article I wrote last year that should give you enough info to get started.

Enjoy...

I've also attached an updated graphic of the sturgeon rig that reflects my current preferences and some regulatory nuances.

Hey, Erik, This is a great article from someone who speaks his experience. It is easy to read and understand, not like Journalists' fishing reports ( sometimes it is hard to know what they are talking about). Thanks for the good paper.
