Santa brought me a pair of waders this Christmas!  Being a wader noobie, I have a couple of questions:

I plan to use them for surf fishing, and I'm considering the purchase of oversized water shoes to wear over the attached neoprene booties, but I'd appreciate the opinions of any who use waders for surf fishing.  Is there a better kind of footwear for the beach?

The waders come with gravel guards.  I assume these are the hooks attached to the cuff of the pant.  There are no instructions and I have no clue how to use them.  Can anyone provide illumination?

Thanks,

Randy

I wear wading boots with my waders... they're just hodgman fairly cheap wading boots. They look like oversized hiking boots.  I like the larger size of them for walking in the sand... takes less effort.  But I've worn neoprene booties as well and they work just fine.

The hooks on the gravel guards are meant to hook onto the laces of your boots.

Thanks for the bits of wisdom fellows.  I wore the NRS booties I wear in the kayak yesterday, and noticed the zippers were extremely unhappy with the sand.  So, whatever I wind up with will be velcro fastened, laced or pull-on.

Yep.  Pat and I are always mindful of how lucky we are.  She reminded me just this morning, when she opened up a new, submersible vhf radio   :headbang:

I finally decided on wader boots.  Inside the boots are polypro sock liners, "SealSkin" waterproof socks and, of course, the neoprene wader booties.  Result = warm, dry, happy feet.   :smt045

The socks are sold separately.  I bought mine about 3 years ago at West Marine.  I don't know if they still carry them.  They work great under booties for kayaking as well as under wader boots.  Here's a link:

I have some seal skin gloves that work great as well. Didn't know they made socks.

I put Spenco Arch Supports in mine and I can stand and hike rivers all day with no probs.
Take the hook on the gravel guard and hook it to the furtherst shoelace. It should cover all your laces keeping the sand and gravel out.
