Hi Jerry,

I bought a used mirrage drive (for spare) last week from a guy who got his Hobie Outfitter's hull stolen!  I'll check to see if he hasn't sold the second drive yet.  The drives were in good condition and he's asking $275 for it.

Do you know the GPS co-ordinates and the depth?  Maybe a freediver or scuba diver can retrieve it for you.
If it costs anything, I'm sure it'll be less than purchasing it. Just a thought.  :smt006

Maybe we should have my brother fish for it.  A few weeks ago he dropped my pole and reel right about where you said you lost your drive.  Can you imagine that about 2 hours later and about 3 football fields away he caught my pole and reel?  That's all he caught all day but he was happy.  Sorry you lost your drive man.  I've got a Hobie too and one time I almost kicked it into the water.  I might start stringing it but I'm not sure how without getting tangled.

sorry about the loss there jerry. Hope you can find a good deal on one, those outbacks are nearly impossible to paddle.

Rey, mirage drives are easy to leash. I installed a padeye in front of the drivewell to the left of the mast, then just tied a small rope to the last drive adjustment hole and a ss clip on the other side of the rope. Hobie also sells a leash kit now too I think.

yeah loosing the drive is a constant worry for me. I leash mine as soon as I hit the launch.

I'll probably swim cowells this weekend.  If you PM me the general numbers, I'll take a peek down there.

BMB,

Do you have a pic of the drive leash?

i can take one but its covered pretty well online. just do a search for mirage drive leash.

http://www.austinkayak.com/products/1971/Hobie-Mirage-Drive-Leash-Kit.html

I just copied it with straight rope (i think its like paracord i got from osh - leftover from my crab trap rigging) tied to the farthest outside adjustment point - i dont have legs that long so i never use that adjustment hole anyways.

i could have made it from bungee but just wanted it simple.  the most difficult part, if you could even call it that, is making sure that you dont have too much rope or it might tangle around your drive.  bulk bungee cord (OSH) would solve that.

then just install a padeye wherever you feel like it as an attachment point to your kayak. then use some sort of ss clip. here's how someone did it on the hobie forums but i feel that might be overkill.

I'd go with the overkill 400.00 for a mirage drive is very pricey ... I have mine leashed to my cleat .
