My friend lost his father in the boat capsize accident at Point Reyes yesterday, where he got caught in the Surfs shore. A 15ft wave demolished their boat. He was the 1st out of 2 found & was conscious for 5 min before passing. 2 still missing.

(07-14) 19:06 PDT Point Reyes -- Two people drowned and another two were missing after heavy surf overturned a boat just north of Point Reyes National Seashore on Wednesday morning.

The 24-foot Bayliner recreational motorboat was on the surf line, the area where waves break, when it overturned shortly before noon. A witness saw the accident and contacted authorities.

The Coast Guard sent two helicopters and two lifeboats. An hour after the accident, crews found two people in the water, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Erik Swanson.

The people were taken to Bodega Bay, where they were pronounced dead. Authorities were still searching for the other two missing boaters Wednesday night.

Neither of the two boaters who were pulled from the water wore life jackets. It was unknown whether the missing passengers had flotation devices.

The Coast Guard determined that there were two more people onboard by interviewing family members of the victims, whose names were not released.

Given the size of the boat, the surf line was a particularly dangerous place for the boat to be, Swanson said. But, he added, the surf line "is a very dangerous place to operate in any vessel."

The Coast Guard said the group had left from Bodega Bay to spend the day fishing.

"Conditions on the water were fairly good, but anytime you're operating on the surf, there are breaking waves," Swanson said, adding that the waves were 6 to 8 feet in the area.

The Coast Guard recommends that there be a floatation device for every person onboard, including mandatory requirement that children 13 and younger wear life jackets.

"We encourage people to have life jackets onboard," Swanson said. "It could have saved a life."

Just saw the article about this accident - so sorry to hear of your friend's loss, as well as the other other families involved. The Coast Guard has called off the search for the other two missing people.

We were fishing this exact spot last April. The fish are in close on the beach and if you really want them they lie in under 20 ft of water. This presents a huge problem if the operator doesnt pay attention ALL the time to the swell. 2 times this day the operator was lulled into a sense of  security that can change with one rogue wave or being too close the zone. If you go out to ten-mile be cautious of the swell and your postion. Always. This tragic event is very, very sad. The losses will be felt by the families forever. Heart out to them and theirs. Craig

You can see from the pics that it was a very flat day when we were there. None the less, the swells build up quick and steep.

Did they have engine trouble, or just got overwhelmed, I wonder?

The surf zone is not a good place to hang out...  especially in a Bayliner.

My condolences, Jeff.
