I went out to the CA DFG site and their surf perch classification page SUCKS.
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/mspcont2.html

All those pictures of sad, dried out, blurry perch.

I'd like to make a better version.

So please use this thread to post pictures I can use/link-to as I build a guide to perch.
(if you'd prefer email, you can send pictures to the address: perch @ tower . org)

Currently I have pictures of:

Any idea of what these are?  Shiner surf perch?  Or silver surf perch?

Big Red - I sent you a PM with a link to some pics I posted on Fishsniffer.

Feel free to use any of those pictures.  :smt006

BTW - the perch above is a walleye surfperch.

In Loving Memory of Mooch, Eelmaster, Shicken, and Cabeza De Martillo

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

That last one wan't a surf perch.  For those keeping track, that was a yellowfin croaker.  And based on their range, the beach sand, as well as the life guard tower in the background, it wasn't caught in Northern California so you don't have to worry about memorizing that one.

Yea, but it was around Point Mugu.  The place where I was yesterday taking picutres of the BIG waves.
Could you imagine, hopping on your kayak, start paddling, then out of nowhere you see this in front of you.

I took my daughter down to the Monterey Bay Aquarium today so she could run around like a monkey in a big dry kid-friendly area.

They have a great collection of surf perch in the aviary, and around in various displays.  I'm now pretty aware of what all the different species look like, etc.  I'll have to get down there one day in the new year and try to take some photos through the glass.

They have a HUGE green cabezon there, too, that gave me a mean look before it swam away.

I LOVE the MBA :smt007....I feel like a dumbass for not visiting the White Shark that was on display last year  :BangHead: The Steinhart Aquarium in SF is another option - not as big as MBA but it's still a nice place to go when the weather forbids you to go fishing  :smt011

Nope that's a blacksmith, which is actually a type of damselfish and not a surfperch.   I believe blacksmith's make it up to Monterey Bay, but are much more common in the kelp beds off Southern California.

Doh! :study: I learned something new today.
now that I have over 100 posts, that makes me a SurfPerch. That will have to do for now, until I get a pic of one.
