I'm caretaking a place in the country by Occidental.  The house was a former group-home for troubled kids, and is large and visible from the road, with no fence or gate.  Naturally it is a target for crime.

Last year, somebody pulled in with a big dump trailer and let loose about 5 yards of broken furniture and old carpet.

Then my garden tools went missing.

About a month ago my awesome 13' Grumman canoe went missing, which I kept leaned against the back of the house.

Two weekends ago, I arrived home around noon on Sunday to a burglar in the house who fled with most everything I have of value, including all my freshwater rods and tackle.  She cleaned out about $3500 worth of stuff.  I got her license plate number which is registered to a known burglar but the lazy cops still haven't got around to arresting her.   :protest:

I was getting ready to fish Tomales tomorrow, so I headed down to the bottom of the property far from the road where I keep my yak, only to find it stolen also.  It was there last weekend.  Somebody disconnected the propane tank from my bbq on Wednesday night so maybe they grabbed the yak too.  They didn't steal the tank because it was mostly empty.

This sucks.

The yak is a mango colored Cobra Navigator.  It has two rod holders mounted behind the seat, and a 9" diameter round hatch mounted just in front of the seat.

I have a bunch of bikes I don't mind losing.  I'm going to toss one in a poison oak bush for a while, then leave it out for the taking.

I hate thieves!
Dude, I have two dogs: a Pit, and Pit/Mastif mix... why? Because I lived in East Oakland and my stuff kept disappearing and/or getting vandalized. That all stopped after I got dogs. And tons of them need homes.

I'm just saying dogs can help with security.

I'm really sorry to hear about your losses.

Sorry man, that's awful.  i grew up in a pretty neighborhood where we got robbed repeatedly.  they even stole our puppy.  as a real young kid, i walked into my bedroom and saw a burgler leave out the bedroom window.  the only solution was to move.  Stay on the cops until they follow through.  it might not help you get your stuff back, but important to have them service your needs, who knows what else you'll ask them to do.

have loads of gear you can borrow if you need, i'm not yakfishing much this summer

I hate thieves, and I hate the idea of thieves running good people off even worse.

Take a stand, mark your territory.  I'd get a couple dogs and maybe a couple of those game cameras like Mako1 has.  Clean your rifles in plain view on the porch a few times.

Motion-detecting lights also work wonders...  maybe one in the driveway?

They are crimes of opportunity.  Make it a hassle for em and they will look elsewhere.

Eric, do you know of any game cameras on the market with a delay adjustable from 1-30 seconds?  The minimum delay I've been able to find is 30 seconds.

I had some trash dumped on the property last year, so I bought a cheap trail-cam to record every car in & out of the driveway.  Unfortunately it has a 30 second delay and is pretty useless as a surveillance tool.  It also has a pretty narrow angle-of view, so it will hardly capture much of the yard/driveway.

I think I'm going to put a cable across the driveway so if somebody wants to drive in, they'll have to risk getting stuck in the dirt.

So sorry to hear this... Its a good wake up call for me though!  I've been lazy about storing the yaks after each weekend and just leaving them on the 4Runner.  But I'll take em down and store them in the garage from now on!

Do you have any insurance to cover the losses??
