Took my new dive mask out for the first time yesterday.
After watching the NOAA and WX reports it seemed like it would be less than ideal conditions. Turned out to be a pretty nice day.......except.
My new Seadive Cateye-1 SS Rayblocker dive mask was touted by the salesman as having a special anti-fog coating. I was told not to use ant anti-fog drops on it as it would harm the coating....OK. I don't use drops anyway, usually a piece of kelp or good ol' spit works.
Yesterday was hot on the coast. After suiting up, hiking and roping down to the beach I was roasting. Got into the water and noticed my viz was crap. Mask was fogged. I let in some water, blew it out...mask was still fogged.
I dropped my anchor line on the float, put some more water in the mask, cleared it and went for a dive. By the time I reached 15 feet the mask was so fogged I couldn't see anything.
After this happening several more times I did some kelp on the inside...still had a problem with fogging. Spit, same problem.
I dicked around with that thing for a good hour until I think my body had cooled down enough so it wasn't a total issue but still not crystal clear.
I got  my limit and headed home.
All in all a pretty frustrating day OTW.
Anyone else have a problem with a mask fogging so bad??
This has never happened to me like this before so I was wondering what others have experienced.

I've only used the tooth paste polishing when new then re-application of spit beofre the dive and have never had a fogging issue.  The one time in scuba class that I used anti fog....it burned the crap out of my eyes.

Slice of potato rubbed on the inside is what I learned to use while in Italy. Never a fog since then.

Never had a mask with a coating,

Otherwise, tips from the instructor 25 yrs ago
toothpaste scrub when new,
then Joy dishwashing liquid (1-2 drop spread over the whole inside glass) before each dive session, rinse WELL.  Never had a fogging problem. Unless I forgot the Joy, then spit works pretty well.

Yours, sounds like a new-tech idea that just doesn't work.

When I bought some goggles for surfing (yeah, I'm that blind, but they darken up in the sun, so I can stare into the south swells)- they look like swim goggles, just a little beefier -from Murray Marine- the instructions said to use baby shampoo on the inside, then rinse, then liquid furniture polish on the outside (buff it off) so the water wouldn't stick.  Seems to work well.
When I was checking what to use inside a dive mask I bought, I found someone on the net who uses 20-20 car windshield cleaner fluid concentrate.  That seems to work better than the baby shampoo. Apply, rub and rinse.  I don't even know if they make it anymore- I found an old (green) plastic bottle of it in my garage.  It also worked on my swim goggles.
When I've forgotten to clean the glasses I wear out on the kayak, and they fog up in real wet air, my spit ain't worth s@#$, and kelp doesn't help.  I should put a small bottle of 20-20 in my tackle box.

be cautions about spitting in the mask and using it in place of defog. when i worked at wallins there were folks who came in speaking of their eye infections which came as a result of using spit in their masks. i would recommend baby shampoo and water mixed 50 / 50 or do a good scrub of the inside of the mask with real toothpaste "Paste" and under hot water to get the silicone release out of the inside, then any defog used sparingly will work well.

bringin back this post cuz i had the same issue yesterday

its like a chain of events that happen that start with the mask , first it kept fogging and then while decending ide equalize and since its got a big nose silicone area i woulndt fuly plug my nose and would end up squirtin water in my eyes.then as i try to flush water through my mask i swallow a mouthfull of sea water! this cycle kept going on and on and was draning me ,   with all this stressfull shit going on i ended up feeling sick. still got my limit but WTF.

I scrubbed the sh!t out of my mask with toothpaste as recommended by several experienced divers....5 times.
The reason I bought the damned thing was because it fit so well.
After the toothpaste scrub....5 times...I took it out diving.
It worked like a charm. I had one of, if not THEE, best dives of my life.
I did the usual ritual of finding a piece of kelp and wiping the inside of the mask with it then rinsing it with sea water. Worked like a charm.
I guess that cleaning the inside of the mask and makin it free of any mfg film makes all the difference in the world.
Good luck.

They suppose to rinse the mask well after rubbing it with their saliva!  I've been doing this for many years without eye infections or go blind yet  :smt003

Use bon-ami to scrub the inside of the faceplate with. This is a non-scratch compound that cleans well. The fogging comes from the thin coating of slicone still on the glass after manufacturing. If this residue is not off all the anti-fog crap in the world aint fixing it.
