Hey All,

I am new to Kayak fishing! I have been fishing the bay area for halibut, stripper, and trout for about 10 years now. I finally got a kayak and wanna get started right away! If anyone would be interested in some company/showing how its done, let me know.

General locations of preference(Live in the East Bay):
San Pablo Reservoir
Lake Berryessa
SF BAY(anywhere from Oakland to San Pablo)
Delta
Clear Lake
Fort Bragg/Mendocino county

What is your paddling experience? Might want to consider taking an intro to kayaking class from a reputable Kayak shop before heading out. Proper paddling skills, self rescue, dressing for immersion are a few skills you'll need to learn before getting out there. You want to be a "paddler" first and a "fisherman" second.

Good luck!

I went through one day course. I have been out paddling about 5 times just getting a good feel for the kayak. I Practiced getting off and back on the kayak in the middle of the lake at lake Berryessa with success. I usually stay near the shore.
As far as gear: I do have a wet suit, booties, and life vest.
I am an experienced boater, i'm usually out at the Lake/Delta about every other weekend in the summers.

Do you recommend taking additional courses?

I plan on starting at San Pablo Dam and lake Berryessa. Just purchased a pair of Bait casting Set-up's and plan on using them at the lakes off the kayak.

That's a good plan, get used to the rig and starting to fish from it, it's different, but that what it is all about...

Just don't under estimate the Bay or the ocean, as a boater you already know they both deserve Great respect...

practicing surf launches and taking a class in that would go a long way....

Hi, i just went down to Monterey Bay Kayak and took the Open water (Ocean) fishing skills clas.  They offer it for $110.00 on the second Sat of every month.  The instructor Aaron Hull was great,  really knows his stuff.  It was totally worth it.  He also offers great advice.

Russian gulch 6-7 miles so of fr bragg...well I headed that way the weekend before and ended up @ Casper beach instead plans change :smt001...not recommended for new to salt...freaking shore break that was AWESOME/scary!!! going to post some pics on that after i fig my camera out tonite...but Russian Gulch has a sweet beach very protected nice camp sites...also albion is an easy launch, tide takes u out and brings u back...just bring a wrist rocket and skills because I was tested there...and what's not funny is one moment your enjoying the sights and sounds and the next it's survival mode....so full water immersion/self rescue in not so flat water...noodles, GPS, VHF, GUN!!! :smt002...a buddy that's not grounded on beach :smt003  I do a lot of solo...but...$hit happens and Buddy's are nice to have...and macho crap aside anything can happen and will when you least expect it!!! :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Welcome from another newby compared to some of the guys on this board. I've actually been at it for about two years but I feel like kayaking fishing is limmitless because there is so much water on the planet.

I live in Alameda, so naturally I like to hit the rock wall during the summer months to drift live bait (shiners, smelt, sardines that I catch in the east bay) on a Carolina rig to catch halibut, and those odd stripers. Days with slow tides are great, I usually fish incoming because I like to paddle out against current then drift back.

Anyway I'll post on hook ups next time I go out.

Sounds great i also live in the east bay and alameda would be very manageable for me. ill be looking for that hook-up.
