brother, go to KONA instead - and I'll hook you up with the a GREAT fisherman and a very funny guy! (he's now a charter fishing boat capt). He 's a former Bay Area resident and truly a LEGEND. He used to slay sripers in the Delta, Salmon in Santa Cruz / Linda Mar and Halibut in Montara = and he did it all on his dinky 12-ft. aluminum boat. Chirs/cpyak is going to Kona sometime soon and I hope he gets in touch with my buddy.

I was there in October and fished with True Blue Charters out of Lihue.  Very friendly and knowledgable captain and crew (Junior).  Caught a couple of small Dorado and had a good Wahoo bite that came off.

Also lots of guys fishing from shore near Poipu Beach and I also saw a guy spear fishing there who came back with a few nice fish (Parrot Fish and a couple of others).  l

Hey GTO...

We stayed in Kauai a couple years ago at Kiahuna Plantation.  I woke up every morning at sunrise and fished along the beach for all kinds of small and unusal reef fish.  It was a lot of fun.  Carolina rigged 1/4 oz bullet weight with #6 or #8 baitholder hook and a little strip of squid.  You'd catch something on almost every cast but break off a lot of them in the reef.  Very fun on light tackle.  Bring an 8' light steelhead spinning rod with about 10-12# test for that kind of fishing.

Here's the information I posted on PFIC at that time...  have fun!

That's where I stayed.  Should have brought my rod.  That's actually where I saw the guy spearfishing.  I saw all those fish while snorkeling, next time I'll try to hook a few of them as well.  Some of those Parrot fish looked pretty big - 3-4lbs at least.

I'm not too impressed with the boat fishing out there, I've gone twice and franky, I catch more fish of better quality out here.  Perhaps I haven't been there in the right season or something, but it's been dissapointing.  Next trip is going to be baja for sure.

i will be in kona tommorrow. i will fish for marlin on tuesday; i already have 2 under my belt. i am also equipped to fish for ulua from kayak and shore. in addition i will spend a couple of nights perched on the lava flows [very drunk]catching sharks, moray eels and other creepy things. under the stars in the pitch black, it is one of the few experiences that allows me to explore my existential thoughts.

A number of years ago I spent a week camping on Kuaui.  $3 per night for a campsite next to the beach.  Spent half the time near Hanalei and the other half the week near Hanapepe.  I didn't have a rod with me on that trip, but there were lots of locals fishing from the beaches and catching a variety of strange reef fish.  If you've never camped in Hawaii, it's defintely something to put on the list.  You'll see Hawaii as you've never seen it before.

I went to Oahu this summer, it was my first time going to Hawaii.   I saw Hawaii in a way I thought I would never see it.  The strangest thing was all the people who appeared to be living on the beaches and a number of them had the inflatable jump houses for kids.  It was just plain wierd!  It definatley looked like they were living there, not camping.  When I was snorkeling from the beach in front of our house I saw schools of fish that were silver with a black spot on the side(I think they were some kind of jack).  I wish I had a speargun.
