i have a 10' pelican kayak ... that i'm not really fishing in, but i do wanna throw that onto my car's roof so i can take it to some lake or some calm lagoon.

I did have pelican's roof kit, but on the returning trip of my third 40mile trip...  one of the foam blocks just got blown away ( thank god the kayak stayed on the roof for 8 more miles n made it back home save) ... and that kit, even though its made for its own pelican kayak, the foam's curve doesn't really fit, and needless to say, its not that reliable...

but im not gonna let that stop me from exploring the wonderful world of kayaking.
any suggestion as to what i should get for roof rack?  my suv has factory tracks, but not rails. whats the cheapest most reliable rack out there? ._.  i would get the factory oem roof rail+ kayak carrier, except that'll set me back bout $500-600 bux  -_-

That sounds kinda steep?  What kind of SUV is it and have you looked at roof racks for it?

For instance, I purchased a factory rack for my element and it set me back ~200 or so.

Another option is the inflatable roof racks.  I was thinking of using it on my Z, but ended up selling it instead.

I've got factory tracks on my Explorer, and found a used Thule foot setup on Ebay for $60.00. Then I ordered the 65" bars from a closeout sale at a sporting goods store in Colorado for $40.00. $12.00 for ratcheting straps at Kragens, $112.00 total

I see used racks all the time on CL or Ebay. If your vehicle has raingutters you can do almost anything.
I've had good luck with Yakima stuff.

I agree with the previous two, try Craigslist or eBay to find something good but doesn't break the bank.

You might have to do a little research to make sure you get the right attachments to fit your car, and they may be more expensive & harder to find, but if you can afford a porsche suv, that shouldn't be a problem.  :smt002  :smt003

$12.00 for ratcheting straps at Kragens

Careful with the ratcheting straps as it can be over tightened and cause damage to the yak.

This might be a good solution:
http://maloneautoracks.com/cross-rail.php
Avail. at all Fisherman's Warehouse stores as well as many other yak shops.
They also have a full line of saddles and accessories - but I like to haul my yak deck side down on the bars with a padding around the bars simular to a surfboard.
Good Luck,
Eric

ya , the cheap foam rack stuff i had made the kayak visibly bent way out of shape , thats why i wanna look for a rack that i can tie the kayak deck down

I'm in the same boat, trying to find a rack that won't break the bank. I look at the inflatable ones but I'm a bit worried about the scratches that would occur.

I did find this:

What do you guys think of this?

looking around, i seriously dont trust those that clings onto window sills or rain gutters xD

that leaves me looking for expensive thule or yakima stuff, unless i happen to find used ones that'll fit onto my car's factory track

I have 1-48 and  1-58 inch round Yakima bar I'll sell. Also have either a set of Yakima Landshark saddles, or an older set of Yakima saddles. Not sure which saddles I want to keep. If interested just let me know. Also have Yakima 1A mounts with pads for internal gutters, but don't think they will fit your car.
