MBYakker and I launched out of King Salmon early Saturday for the salmon opener.  We were thrilled to have a clean, 2 mile paddle out with the last of the outgoing minus 1.5' tide.  The bar wasn't scary, but it was a mess.  Outside, the swells were not too bad and lots of birds working.  Marking cloud after cloud of bait in 40-50' of water, I trolled for an hour or more before we made our way in jigging a bit along the south jetty for a rockfish.  The radio talk was of only silvers caught, if anything, and the later reports are only now saying a couple of fish were caught fleet-wide for Trinidad and Eureka.  I was there fishing out at the Bell Buoy where many more boats used to hang and fish, back in pre-electronics days, and felt good to be putting the right bait out with just as good a chance as a lot of those boats who'd motored out and gone miles for a skunk.  I made this video wanting to show the awesome power of the ocean we were in outside of the "Jaws" of Humboldt Bay, but it ended up being a tribute to my Dad, and that's just right.   :smt001

Great report and video Eric.

My Dad is coming into town in two weeks and I will be taking him and Valentina out in a rental skiff to get three generations of our family fishing together for the first time...

Thanks again for sharing your experience...truly inspiring.
