Howdy Do.  WOO HOO, after 20-something years of being closed, the Alviso Marina re-opens with a vengence on Saturday June 5, 2010 at 11am.

Wow that new launch ramp is GORGEOUS!!!  There are 2 long kayak launch ramps + 2 big trailer-launch ramps.

County Supervisor Dave Cortese & San Jose Councilmember Kansen Chu take the first kayaks out of the dock after the ribbon cutting at 11am.  Then it'll be a free-for-all as 1000-ish people are estimated to show up, including 100-ish kayakers (assuming we get the PR dialed).

Can you join us?  Please sign up online so we know who's coming and who's paddling what.

Free food, live music, it's a PARTY!!!!

Paddle On!

Hi Dean. That is great! I'll send you a PM and sign up for the event. I would love to volunteer and maybe we (NCKA) could host a table w/ Info about MLPA. The County Supervisor Dave Cortese & San Jose Councilmember Kansen Chu would be great advocates on our side.

Do you know if they did a cleanup of the slough as part of the project?  If not, we should.   :smt002

I'm totally game for that one.  On spearboard they've done beach clean-up style tourneys with awards for most trash collected, we need one.

UPDATE: Received this from Dean McCully late last night! I think this is going to be a great format for us and we will have a great opportunity to educate a large group of people on a few different topics. Giving allot of kids the option to find something to do with their lives in an urban neighborhood being one and the MLPA process coming to the Bay Area being another. Please help my first foray into this venue be a success!!!

Hey Randall

I just saw your registration come in, and you're all set.  VERY COOL!

The parking lot will be open from 8am-10am for dropoff and table setup etc.  We'll try to get as many kayakers into the big new parking lot as we can by 10am.  Then about 10am, the county comes and kicks everybody out the new lot so that just kayaks and tables/chairs and the stage will be in the new lot.  If we can find a band, they'll start playing about 11am, maybe sooner.  Free BBQ from about 11:30am until we run out.  Speeches start 11:30am or so, and ribbon cutting is around noon, right after they cut the ribbon, we'll launch as many kayaks as show up.  Then we paddle till about 2pm when we open the main lot to trailers and let the motor/sailboats in.  Then we just hang out for the afternoon.

Aquan Sports from San Carlos is sending about a dozen kayaks down, so if we get enuf volunteers, we'll be doing kayak demos.  I'll probably bring a handful of my kayaks too (my fleet is currently up to 27 kayaks).  I want to get tons of kids from Alviso kayaking.  Very few of the locals

The event will be a big darned deal.  My buddy Ron Blatman, producer of the PBS series "Saving the Bay" will be there speaking and helping cut the ribbon.  I'm on the board of "Air & Space West Foundation" that's trying to bring a Smithsonian Museum to Moffett's Hangar One, and we're hiring Ron to produce a (very expensive) PBS series on Hangar One.   If things work like I think they will, Ron is also talking about doing a 5th installment of Saving the Bay starting in Alviso & Drawbridge.  Goodness knows there's plenty of stories to be told.

Other than that, spread the word to as many kayak anglers as you can.  Tide is ebbing and will be fairly low, so I haven't a clue how the fishing will be, but I suspect it won't be good, especially with so many boats splashing around.  But who knows, maybe you'd bring up some big fish if you gave it a shot.  In fact I'd love f you could do fishing demos from the dock, or from boats of course too.  What think?

See you Saturday.  It'll be a fun day!

Very cool...if I wasn't teaching Saturday I'd be there.  Hope others can make it to represent NCKA!  :smt004
