It was good fishing with you guys today.  WTG Dave and thanks for the bait!

So the first thing that Lino says when I roll up to him was "I have a rod as A Backup".  :smt044

Couldn't believe it when I heard Lino had caught one with a handline.  It reminds me of catfishing when you hold the rod and feel the line the entire time.  That's something that I want to try... just gotta get a Hobie first. :smt001  Post some pictures of the final product if you get a chance.

Pinoy way, Mooch.

It took me ~5min to get it to my lap. It was a different-feel though. My hand worked like a clutch (auto-tranny).

Thank you all!

NUBIE TERRY FLIPPS YAK OFF FIRST WALL IN POTATO PATCH, SMALL FRONT HATCH GONE.

Before THE HANDLINE BOO YAHH,  things were going OK from as well.  Special thanks to the crew of the Searay inboard with rear step for Terry to do the Bond thing and get in and speed away. Seriously the captin of that boat and crew were great, they followed the floating yard sale out and retrieved most of the gear. My net that I loaned Duane, not so much. Getting to hook up his empty yak to mine, one he won at HMB, and paddle it back to the dock all the while keeping a Hally over the side on a clip and listing to Duane letting me know he is on the way, priceless.
Terry would have come out of its situation on his own, and I believe he would have made it just fine.  I also feel that due to mixed messages and poor communication between Duane and Terry, and Duane and me, that Insaine and myself are more than a little responsiale for Terry's latest 56 digree, it's all about me molment. Terry has some serious water skills. He became very comfortable quickly and soon he was in between Duane and me with no radio, thinking everything is gravy, hatch off, feet inside and way way, way, way, in to unstable a position for that yak in the patch.  Once he flipped the yak, on his way to hear me tell him it is time to decide, north or south, I was impressed by Terry's calm body language in the water. He listened to what I wanted him to do, he did it with a smile, somehow seemingly still asking himself what the hell just happened.  I hope terry becomes a member of NCKA, and has some new found respect for the bay.  More than that, I safety tested myself on that same yak, hatch on, in Richmond, and I can tell you for a fact that our brother Terry would have no problem turning that yak back over by himself and pulling himself back in, grabbing his paddle, and getting his ass back down the wall and home.  The potato patch out off that first wall is for real, hell of a place for a nubie to loose it, but Terry was great.

I was so glad "Tipped-Over" Terry was fine. I was next to him half the time. This incident happened while I was heading back in. Was so surprised to see him on board the PB at the ramp. He did not even looked shaken... one tough dude.

I'm guessin' you don't use spetra on those handlines. You'd be fingerless in no time... Must be fun going way back to basics. I've seen folks use a coffee can before. Put their hand in it and cast it like a spinning reel.

Really basic... 100lb test mono for running line, swivel, sinker, leader, hook. And of course, the spool.

... just gotta get a Hobie first.

Can't go wrong. You'll get what you paid for. PM ChuckE. Last May8 I had a crack on my 07-08 Adventure drivewell tower and water was sipping in.  ChuckE immediately took action. CCK of Oakland processed the paperworks. Hobie covered it with warranty. Awesome customer service.

what can I say but next step, LINGCOD. Ya baybay! Must have been exciting. :smt006

Oh yeah, rockfish, fly-lining stripers at LM, and (maybe, just maybe) STURGEON. I have to be ready for the dino though. Practice with batrays and sharks at the bay might help.

Lino - pretty ghetto using a hand line.  :smt005 You have come a long way from your flyfishing days. If you want to target lings with a hand line, try the "dropping stone" technique from Hawaii.

Something to think about, Scott. It kinda like chumming, isn't it? First, I will check it out if it's legal here in CA.

Looking forward to see a handline derby in the future.

LINO!!!  Awesome you scored with the handline!

I'm trying to figure out how to make my own copy.  It's a unique design, different from ay handline I've seen.

You get an 8" recangular stone and wrap the baited hook with a bank sinker and some palu (chum) onto the stone and tied with a slip knot. Drop it down to the depth you want and pop the slip knot which releases the bait and palu and drops the stone. The bank sinker keeps the the bait from drifting up. In Hawaii they use this technique for yellow fin tuna and use 300-400# pound test. Just in case you thought you were tough going mano y mano with a hali on a handline just imagine a 50-100# tuna.  :smt005  PM me if you want details on how to do it. I have fished with guys who used the technique but have not seen any tuna caught, just amberjacks. If you are using 2 hooks or less and one line, it should be legal unless I am missing something.

Hey Scott, you're right. It is legal as long as you don't go deeper than 180ft. Handline technique has been, and still being used, by village fishermen in the Philippines (PI). They also call it "mano-mano". Taking home yellow-fin tunas and marlins are not uncommon for these local fishermen who uses hand line on their banca (20-25ft wooden boat with outriggers). Being born and raised in the PI encouraged me to practice this traditional technique. The difference... I am on a kayak.

Let's talk more about the palu-ahi technique when we hookup

Right on, Lino!
Lino was cool enough to hook me up with one those of those Pilipino wooden yo-yo's.  Now, I just gotta go out and try to catch a fish with it too. :smt003
