hi, want to dive mendocino headlands (north side) and jack peters area.  May have to lug kayak down the hill for short distance. What's the best place for entry?
Need to add.  My boat is more like a yakboard, only 9  ft and not real stable, so it is really not suited for a long paddle from Russian Gulch.

Straight out little Lake dr. to Hesser.  Park in the North parking lot.  Narrow short trail down to protected beach access.  The last 15 feet on rock slope to sand beach.

Is the North parking lot, the one which has the restrooms?

There's gravel parking right at the end of Little Lake dr.  At the start of Hesser.  As soon as you turn North on Hesser turn left and park.

if you want to use a kayak, you need to launch at Russian Gulch and paddle south.  There are no convenient yak launching spots on the headlands.

Depending on the definition of convenient .  You won't be able to use your wheels.   I've launched at the Headlands many times over the years.  We even got one of those plastic catamaran yaks down to the beach by lowering it down next to the trail.  Its not a cliff.  Just a steep narrow trail.  Much fine paddling and plenty of caves to explore.  Wear a helmet. unfortunately just got back.  Will check that out that lot next time I am up.  Trail by restroom is way too steep. thanks

Batt's tougher than me.  I would never carry a yak with dive gear down any of those cliffs.  I dive and fish all the time off the mendo headlands by yak.  On real flat days I launch at big river and paddle out the mouth.  On less flat days i launch at Russian Gulch and paddle across the bay.  Probably takes more time but I enjoy the paddle.  Paddling is fun, playing Sherpa sucks...IMHO

jcool3:  Nice picture.   "A" is the access that I've always used.  The  first step has eroded.  Leave your weight belt for a separate trip.  I'm afraid that the scallop population is not what it was.  Here's a picture when it was rougher and its still an easy launch.  You can swim out to "A" for some easy Abs on rough days.  Check out the cave in the second picture someday.  Definitely requires a helmet but once your in it opens up going North.  Update your life insurance beforehand.  Its more fishy out toward the reef or across the cove toward Jack Peters Creek.  I'm post an access ( not convenient) to Jack Peters Creek off road 1000 later.  DcBatt

thanks for the tips.  Ab diving has been the easy part, access takes time to figure out, lugging all the diving and fishing stuff is the hard part.  Seems like the fish have been harder to find than the abs.  I love Jack Peters Creek, but hate the walk in.  Never figured out the kayak access.
