The recent rains really has put my interest in sturgeon fishing into HIGH gear.  Bring on the rain!!!

Erik, how long do you think we need to wait before the dino fishing around the Sturgeon Triangle turns on?

Bill, from what I've seen in the past... it turns on about the same time as San Pablo Bay.  Insane Duane and his buddy Dave have done well around the Alameda Rockwall in the past, but the place I'm excited to try again is the Oakland Airport which is actually within paddling distance of the rockwall.  The Oakland Airport produced the winning fish for the last big sturgeon derby.  It beat out the Delta, San Pablo, Alviso, Oyster Point, and every other bay area hot spot.  The best part of all for us kayakers is the convenient parking, easy launch, and 100 yard paddle to prime fishing holes.  Check it out....

Action in the Triangle is good all year... but until the rain swells the rivers and the big tides come along to flush the trash fish and crabs out of the bay, you will go through a lot of bait because of all the bait stealers.

I've noticed that the sturgeon seem to bail out of there when the Herring Spawn gets going in full year.  So when there is a herring spawn... I'd fish wherever they are spawining.  Otherwise the triangle seems to produce all winter.

Last year I caught my only legal sturgeon in the last week of November... but I think I had at least one sub-legal on most other trips.  I had multiple short dinos during my last trip of the year in March on an incoming tide up near the mouth of the Petaluma River.

There have been sturgeon caught from shore at McNears pier and from China Camp already in recent weeks... so I'm pumped to get out there again.

As for Alameda... I'm not sure how it goes... I'd imagine they are in there all year and I bet the herring spawn along the rockwall... so might be a place to watch when the herring start to spawn.

I'm down for trying some new spots this year as well.

Eriks right on they are at Alameda all year the problem is the bait robbers. The timing is after big rains that bring huge amounts of freshwater that blow the bait robbers out of there, or herring spawns that concentrae the sturegon. Damn I can't belive it I sitting here sweating just writing about it.
