I am also willing to take on a newbie but have a few more requirements:
1. Wet suit with paddle jacket
2. Attended a paddling class which included self-rescue
3. Can paddle 5-7 miles

As far as bait and tackle for those new to the ocean I would recommend for rockfish, ling cod and halibut:
#2 - 2 hook halibut stinger rigs
#2 - 2 hook rockfish fly rigs
#2 - 2-4 oz torpedo weights
#2 - 6-8 oz torpedo weights
1# squid
Landing net
Bait knife

Optional - 1-3oz swim baits or scampis, 2-4 oz metal jigs

For sand dabs - 2/0 sabiki or commercial sand dab gangion

For thresher sharks - rapala CD 14

If any newbies want to tag along with someone with a little experience, I'm willing to show you around

Now THAT is true NCKA spirit  :smt045 I salute Pole Pole and Frankfishing for their actions! I wish you both plenty of good karma  :smt008

As for myself, my Chemo theraphy was cancelled today (due to a slight cold) so I will pay my way in to support the cause but I may not paddle out. Getting sick right now is the last thing I need - chemo puts my immune system at an all time low :smt011

Anyway, I will try to show up on Sunday to see my NCKA family :smt002  You guys and gals are my cure  :smt008

Hi,
Is there room for another newbie? Just pulled the trigger for a T-13, and it's ready for some fish blood. I've kayaked lakes a few times in a sit-in, but no ocean experience. Have farmerjohn/pfd/etc, but waiting for the vhf to arrive.
Thanks for all the great info on this site. It really helped in deciding what to buy.

Also, I've got my two guest passes to the Mbay Aquarium if anyone wants to occupy their non-yakking partner/kids while the tourney is underway.  Aquarium is only couple miles south of MBK.

Materalus, I love your Avatar or is that Misdirection! Guys like your guild get paid pretty well for taking people out. Me I am just a poorly amateur who is always swimming more then fishing. I have the only Kayak in the NCKA with a handicap sticker and rather then the regular handles you'll find that on my Kayak, mine are made from stainless steel that you find in showers that help us older folks from slipping in the bath.
I will say that I am proud that when I have to relieve myself (which is all the time because of inconstant nature of my age) I can usually tell you what the bottom structure is like in twenty feet of water.  :smt006
