I don't know if anyone else on this board does this or not, but I sometimes like to record my catch using "gyotaku" the japanese art of fish printing.  This method actually originated in Japan when fishermen about 100 yrs ago wanted to have a record of their catch.  They would cover the fish in ink and press rice paper on the fish to get a print.

There's a little bit more to it than that and if anyone is interested I'll try and remember to take photos of the process next time I do this.  It's a lot easier/cheaper than taxadermy or skull preps.  Until then here is a print I did this summer of a vermilion that I just scanned in today.

Hey Bill,

It's not kayak angling specific, but if I write this up in article format can I still get a sweatshirt?

I think that is totally cool. I too always meant to do this, just always seem to forget untill I'm skinning the fillets. Nice work!

At next year's "Elk" tournament can we have a set up for us all to do one?

Does it have to be rice paper, Brian?  Where does one get rice paper?

I will be happy to spring for some of the materials............and I'll share with Bill because I already have a way cool sweatshirt..... :smt004

I am pretty sure my local art store has rice paper. Once I get the supply list I can double check.

Rice paper works pretty well, but it's not the only material.  If you use fabric paints you can actually make nice t-shirts with this technique.

The idea of the craft fair at the tourney is a good one. I actually meant to bring my fish printing supplies during Elk this year but forgot as I threw my fishing and camping gear together at the last minute.

Anyway, next time I get out to catch some rockfish (hopefully this weekend) I'll be sure to do some fish printing and photo document it.  That and some nice descriptive text should make a decent article.
