Got a little lax & left Wheeleez and a Promar crab trap in the bed of my truck, parked on city streets. Dirtbags cut the cable lock (also attached to kayak) and stole the cart & crab trap last night.  :smt011

Kayak was left alone but I'm pissed about the cart - it had the good, original large balloon wheels. Can you still get those?

that sucks buddy, did you write your name & number on them?

the ones they sell now at REI and other stores are good, not the exact same as the original but they do their job just fine as long as they are not the pvc type.

I have a set of the not so good black rubber tire wheeleez you can bum until you find a suitable replacement though.  you can bum a trap off me too if you need one!

Aaron,

You are in luck.  Due to recent events beyond my control I happen to have more Promars than I can use...

I am sure they have no clue what the wheels are for (even if the yak was there) I would keep an eye on CL.

That sucks big time Aaron. I hope you find yourself a good replacement. If I am
ever around and you need to use a cart, you can always borrow mine.

Hey Aaron, sorry to hear about the bum luck and sorry-ass thieves. You did say you were lax. Is it normally your way to not do that, to leave suff in the back of the truck overnight in SF, even if locked? By the way, how big a cable lock did they cut? I just want to learn from your experience cuz I do the same thing, with a skinny cable, but not overnight very much.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Thanks for the responses & offers, guys.
Eric B, you're a big guy - it's OK to have big crabs.
Fortunately, I do have another unused trap stored in my mom's garage.

I say I got lax because in the city (unfortunately, any urban area) it's kind of known that you should never leaving anything of value, or even that looks like it might have value, visible in a car. A knapsack or shopping bag, empty or not, sitting on seat is a prime target. Not a particularly great state of affairs but that's how it is.

I left the Wheeleez in the back of the truck knowing they'd be tempting to some to the thieves who might see it but figured the lock would deter the opportunistic vagabonds who will take anything that's not nailed down. This type steals anything, whether they know what it is or not, just to try & turn it around for a few bucks, usually to get their next fix.

The problem is once I got away with it for a few days, I got a bit too comfortable and left it out there. I parked in a fairly dark spot and somebody with a hack saw or bolt cutters either stumbled upon it or saw it and came back for it. Chances are, they probably saw it and came back specifically to get it.

It could be someone who doesn't know what what they were taking but figures if the stuff is worth locking, it must have some value. Or it's also very possible that it was someone who knows exactly what they were taking. I don't want to be too cynical but not all kayakers are like the good folks here!

Anyway, the stuff is gone but the wheels do have identifying marks on them - if I see them, I'll know them.

The lock is a Master Lock Python:  http://www.masterlock.com/promos/python/8413python_lock.shtml
"Cut Resistance"  :smt003  - 3/8" (10 mm), 100% steel braided cable

I know a few other people use this cable and I would still trust it, but just not for extended periods of time or extremely valuable stuff - I wouldn't lock a motorcycle with one and obviously, if someone has a mark on your kayak, this wouldn't be much a barrier.

Sorry to hear about your loss.  I have thieves.  :smt011  :smt012 :smt009  :smt013 :smt070 :smt075 :smt076

As my pops used to say, a lock will keep an honest man honest.  Somebody who wants something will find a way to get it.

I had one of these securing my kayak to the roof of our truck a couple of summers back...drove waaaaay up north to go camping & forgot the damn key.  Ace hardware sold me a cable cutter for $80 that cut through the cable in about 5 seconds.  So yes, not something to secure a yak overnight in a risky area!

Sorry to hear about your loss tho...hope the jackasses get caught.  :smt011

Sorry to hear that Eric, its such a bummer.
When I lived in SF, out in the Richmond, I used a cable lock when I had my boat on the car. Didn't have a problem, but since I had scrimped & scrimped to buy the yak I was pretty careful not to leave it out overnight.

I kept nothing in my bronco in plain sight except a cheap pair of sunglasses & a pair of canvas coveralls under the seat. I forgot one night left my truck unlocked,  one night, ONCE, and both items were gone the next day.  :smt013
This was in a traditionally safe neighborhood, on 19th& Geary, right around the corner from Gordo Taqueria.

It's also good practice to leave open your glove compartment and keep it empty when parking in questionable places...ESPECIALLY if you have a bling bling car :smt002
