I am looking for a sit on top kayak for fishing.  I would like to spend $500 or less, but I might go slightly higher than $500 depending on what you have.  I would like it to be around 10' and not only be good for fishing but also decent for the occasional distance paddle as I will be using it for both.  I live near Sacramento (Folsom) so the Bay Area would be a bit far for me to go at this point.  If you have a kayak that fits the bill let me know!  Thanks!!!

Oh and I am new to the forum/kayak fishing so I just wanted to introduce myself in my first post.  My name is K.C., I have lived in Folsom for about 2 yrs, but I am originally from Oregon.  I am really looking forward to getting into this whole lifestyle and I will probably see you all at some upcoming events.  Thanks to everyone on the forum for the great info I gotten so far!  :smt006

Welcome. Keep looking here (in classifieds) and on craigslist. At that price point (i assume) you are looking for used. You should be able to land an ocean kayak (scupper pro, scrambler or maybe a P13). 10' is pretty short for the ocean and for distance paddling. If you are looking for river or lake 10' should work. But there are not a ton of 10' boats on this board. so CL may be a better bet.

Thanks for the response!!! I have been looking on Craigslist and I even posted a similar wanted ad there as well.  I have a 10' sit in right now and that size seems to be manageable, should I be going larger for my fishing yak?  I will mainly be doing lake and river (I'm so new to this I am not even thinking about ocean quite yet, plus there are so many places around me in Folsom).  Any advice/guidance for a newbie is much appreciated!!!!

Thank you very much!!!!  I may have to take you up on the offer.  After getting everyone's feedback and doing some research I am thinking of getting a 12-15' yak.  The main thing I have to figure out is how to transport a longer boat, the bed of my truck is only 6'.  I might weld up a extension for my trailer hitch and put it on that and the roof.  Any suggestions on how to get the longer yaks to and from the water?

Oh and as a side note I built this thing last weekend for my little 10' cheap sit in.  Worked good on the test run, now just got to slap some paint on it.  Shouldn't have any problems using it for a longer boat...

Thanks again for the offer Mike! I'll let you know if I wanna try out the longer one before I buy my own.

K.C.

Z is haul my boat in the bed of my truck. I use the "T" extension from the tow hitch. But I am able to haul the boat (13+ foot boat) in my short bed F150. 6 feet off overhang is doable.

For the truck bed, go to Harbor Freight, they have a bed extender.  It plugs into your receiver, has tie down hooks, and you can get it for like $30.  I've had mine for years with no problems (just put some carpet  over the bar or you'll scrape up your hull).

I have an Ocean Kayak Mars, 13' long, sit on top with a couple hatches and rod holders I'm looking to get rid of.  I'm up in Redding, but will be in Sac in about two weeks.  I have it on Craigslist up here, take a look and let me know if you might be interested.

Why not fish from the yak you have now?
That one will work for lakes, even better for rivers :smt002
A  rod holder and tackle box and your fishing :smt004
At least until you try out a few SOT's before you buy.
Welcome to the madness :smt004

Thanks beenfishing!  Good advice, I will be getting one of those, that's a great deal.  Good ol' harbor freight.

lol@welcome to the madness Tad, you arent joking.  Well I want to get a second yak that is a little more geared towards fishing, but almost more importantly I want to be able go with someone else.  So I figured if I had a second yak I am much more likely to have that happen.

Thanks for the response Z!!!

I am proud to announce that I have welcomed a new member to the family!  I bought a used (former rental) Emotion Grandslam with the angler package (14' 5")...I took it out for a spin and loved it!  Thanks guys for steering me in the direction of the larger yak, would be hard to deal with less space, and the thing tracks and paddles beautifully.  I did purchase the truck bed extender from Harbor Freight and it works great!

I took my first trip out on Folsom Lake last Saturday, it was crazy windy, but a great day.  I was thankfully I had invested in an anchor before I was out there wishing that I had.  I am looking forward to taking a lot of trips this summer.  I am also looking forward to getting together with some of you all and hooking some fish.  I am forewarning everyone I am a total noob to yaking and fishing, but I am learning quick.

Thanks again for everyone's input...see you all out there on the water soon!!!

Adventure Sports (Kayak City) but it was a Lake Natoma rental.  A bit scuffed and faded but other than that in good shape and a good deal.
