IMO. All fish should be measured on a hawg trough including sturgeon with the tape measure or yardstick butted up tight against the end of the trough. An alternative method, especially for sturgeon or other big uns, would be to put both the fish and the end of the tape measure butted up against a wall. The same wall.  :smt005

Yeah jim, those would be better but i am trying to run light this year and I fish solo a lot so I can't really be messing with a tape measure while on the water.  mostly its a backup to the hog trough.  the measurement probably won't be perfect but i will round down if necessary and put up a poll when unnecessary.  :smt044

also its related to my ling last year. I really wanted to release it but I couldnt get a good measurement with a tape and a picture at the same time.  I felt bad when I opened it up and it was full of eggs.  coulda been thousands of baby lings from that girl out there terrorizing sand dabs right now.

IF you want a good longer hawg trough.. just make one out of a rain gutter & stop.  :)

Maybe somebody :smt002 needs to investigate where WCH gets their 38"er's.

I'm going to drill a hole in mine and put a wooden yardstick on the backside and flip it open like a pocket knife.

If and when I need to measure 30"+ that is.  :smt005

Did the paddle sticker, it has a couple of major issues:

1. It wears off where you hold the paddles, hope your fish does not fall into this range

2. Round paddles + flopping fish are not a good combo

That actually sounds like a good idea!

Mine came with a hole in it already.  I use it to hang it on the wall in the garage but might have to look into the yardstick idea.

. It wears off where you hold the paddles,

Suntan lotion will greatly facilitate this process.

BMB,

If you want to use that paddle ruler in AOTY, you'll want to post a calibration photo showing that it is still accurate after your modification.    I would suggest a good photo of a measuring tape being used to measure the paddle ruler.

i was planning to do that after i used it for the first time..if i ever get a chance to!  but we should make sure that everyone who uses a non-standard ruler does too right?

Sorry I should have mentioned that.  Yes, any non-standard ruler should be calibrated with photo evidence.
