Weather Report is calling for some crappy stuff this weekend.  I hope it's wrong.

Actually the forecast for Sunday is getting better.  They were calling for 10-13 foot waves, now it's only 5-10.  Easier to find SOMEPLACE to get out when it's only 5-10.  Looks like a West Swell, though, so could hit the normally benign spots differently.

Maybe hit Monterey on Sunday if Delmonte does OK on a West Swell.  Chef?  Seabreeze?

In the meantime, the perch bite is improving at Capitola in front of the rivermouth for barred perch- they are catching and releasing some steelhead off the wharf there (bobber and a worm, if you can believe it), and two, count 'em two, halibut were caught by the lighthouse this week in 40 feet of water.  Rockfish still going strong locally, as well as lings.  Just hope this big swell doesn't drive everything away.  I guess Friday will be surfcasting in the morning and Sunday will be on the yak in Monterey, or locally if the conditions are friendly enough.

:notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: How big is that hog!!!

Since Joel decided to infect me with his flu I don't know if I am going to make it out this weekend or not. I will aim for Sunday, I would not mind catching a big ole ling to end the season on a high note.

Heh Allen,

Last weekend was west swell also.  Coral St was a washtub.  Fair swell even down to Del Monte.

Stillwater was sheltered and lovely.  Yet, Carmel Beach was surfable.

We'll post what we find tomorrow.

Sorry you have the evil virus too, Bill.  It's taken me two weeks to get over it......and I'm still coughing...... :smt012

I'd love to join you Perchin' on Friday or Sat AM.  I hear rain on Friday is likely...

I hit the beaches around the harbor earlier today.  8-10 little shiner surf perch for me, but not one of those darn elusive BSP.

Capitola, you say?  Perhaps I'll be able to skate out tomorrow afternoon while the baby naps and slap some grubs down by the wharf.

I hope we can fish together tomorrow Red.  I think Capitola is the spot, and I'm gonna be there EARLY, to hit the high toide and avoid the shoppers. Look for me around 7am.  If you can make it, I'll have some hot coffee!

Sunday probably will be Stillwater then, thanks Pat.  I'm still a little worried about the predicted south winds, though.  That would mess up Stillwater big time.

Heh Allen,

I can't predict Sunday.  Conditions are certainly less inviting now than they were two days ago.  The NW swell should be broken by Pebble Beach.  It looks like most of the wind will be further south but could be a bit chilly.

The NOAA forecast has Del Monte looking more mellow than Carmel Bay.....but that isn't always reliable.

Good fishing.......... :smt006

I hear you Pat....Delmonte might be the right choice over Stillwater if the sea breeze is a factor (yukyuk)

I think either of those spots will be more favorable than here in Santa Cruz which might be VAS conditions....We'll see.
Thanks again for the Loc word.

This evening, the beach just north of Del Monte, despite one seriously stiff off shore breeze, did not look as bad as the forecast would suggest it should have looked............. :smt102

Thanks, Bill and Pat.  I like the format of that weather report, and I like the current content, as well.  Looks very much more do-able than I feared.

So the question is.....Delmonte or Stillwater?  I'll make some calls tomorrow and see if i can gather intelligence.

Delmonte doesn't cost $$ and i know there's fish out there, possibly errant halibut; Stillwater might have the uberling and last licks for lings and cabezone.  I lean towards stillwater, and would be stoked to go fishing with you there.

I think i have a touch of that flu thingie you guys are complaining about, but today is bett3er than yesterday, so fingers are crossed I'll beat it by Sunday.

I may have a client with me, but he's experienced with freshwater and knows we probably will fish down there rather than up here.

there are fish to be had here, just feels like more of a sure thing in monterey, bith for fish counts and sea conditions.

Monterey is a very cool place to fish, I'm learning.

At the moment, despite the offer of stellar company, it doesn't look like our yaks will see the water again for lings and cabs.

Keep us posted on your successes.

Allen,

Scouted the coast from Stillwater-Carmel up to Pleasure Point this morning.  Stillwater wasn't still, swells forming at the Pinnacles almost to the breaking point.  The only place I saw doable (no surf launch experience) was Lover's Point, a few divers were out but the stiff breeze was everywhere.  Did see a couple of hearty souls headed towards Pleasure Point from Capitola, the surfers were definitely having their day at the Point.  Still pretty windy.  Where do you lauch/park in Capitola?

Planning to keep an eye on the weather forecasts and head to Stillwater again Sunday am very early.  Hope we all have a great fishing day to remember.  It would be great to meet up with you.  I should be able to talk a couple more into it (Kim, Dave?).  Will be on Ch 69.

Spent this afternoon down at Capitola, slapping grubs around.  Not a perch to be seen from the beach although I managed a sad little (4-incher) from the pier just beyond the break...   and it was way too big for kayak launching from the beach.

Usually, the launch is from the beach just West/North of the pier.  In the summer you get 4-6 inch shore break there.  Today there were boogie boarders and a few short boards.  For those of you familiar with Capitola, I tried to count surfers from around Privates down to the Capitola jetty break and stopped counting around 75!  The surfers were out in force!

Another kayak option at Capitola is to launch off the pier itself.  You can pay $$ to have the kayak lowered or lug it down the ramp yourself (probably takes two burly guys).  Either way would get you in the water behind the surf.  But today was WINDY, too, so it just didn't look like a whole lot of fun.  I talked to a few guys in skiffs and they were coming back empty handed.
