I recently got a humminbird 343c...looking to mount it somewhere a little more accessible than the sail mast hole. i looked and tried but it will likely not fit into my side pocket.  has anyone mounted their's on the right hand rail right next to the side pocket?  i have a ram 107 mount for it and I was thinking that this RAM diamond base might just fit right there...

http://kayakfishinggear.com/ramcompositediamondmountwith1ballmount.aspx

this 343c is for freshwater use only. in the salt i'll stick with the 245ds that I have since i would rather not kill my color fishfinder.

i am planning to run a wire seal up through the right side pocket, with cables coming out to the side rail where the ff is mounted.

I was also wondering if maybe I could mount the diamond plate inside on the edges of the side pocket so I can keep it a bit out of the way for when I load the kayak on my racks.

any other ideas?

ben, the FF on my hobie was mounted in the location you talk about. Its nice that its close but i am tired of swinging my legs over it every time I sit side saddle. I can only imagine how I am gonna whack it with a ling or butt on board. i am moving it to the mast hole.

berg, i put my color one there without an issue.  it sometimes gets a little in the way when i am pedaling but not too bad.  the color one is used for freshwater and calm water in the bay/ocean only.  in the ocean i will revert back to my 245ds at the mast hole.  i havent had a problem with straddling the kayak or side saddle but i dont do those too often and i have short t-rex legs

i mess around a lot with the color FF on a daily basis while in freshwater, but in the salt i just leave it on "auto" everything.

Got mine on the mast post and I love it there. Out of the way to keep the deck clear but still reachable. I mounted mine on a crutch tube that fits custom into the mast hole. Quick to remove. I also put a little knotched foam on top for a place to lay your rod when your tying, rebaiting, etc. You can even leave it there while you peddle without interfering with your legs.

I mounted mine with a ram mount in the side pouch.  The mast hole is just too far away for my vision.  There's also the issue of being able to reach it to change the settings without having to scoot forward and risk flipping the yak.  I loosen the mount and flip it down when I need to get a leg over it without any difficulty.  I think both locations have pros and cons but I think the side mount is the best.

Hey Martin, I have mine mounted in the side pouch too.  but I have one problem - how do I keep the FF mounted there?  every time I have to re-run the wires through the ram mount. kind of a pain.

I drilled a small hole and used a rubber grommet which is sealed with goop.  The wires run inside the hull up to the mast mount where my battery box and transducer are located. I usually leave mine connected so I don't have to deal with issues with the connection plug on the FF.  I cut the grommet with a razor blade to get it around the cable rather cutting the plug and reconnecting all of the wires.  The hole was just big enough to squeeze the connector through and the rubber grommet creates a nice tight seal where it passes through the hull.

how do you keep your ff connected? Does it fit into your side pocket? Mine is too large and I have to disconnect it each time to load the kayak on the roof

I haul my yak right side up on a Yakima rack with hully rollers at the back and Mako saddles at the front.  I think it would still work if I turned the yak over.  I just loosen the big wing nut on the ram mount and push the FF forward.  I'm pretty sure it sits lower than the sides of the hull in that position.  I really never invert the yak, so it's never been an issue.  I store it in my garage in a sling made of 2 wide nylon straps with ratcheting handles to lift it from the rack to the garage ceiling.  We will have to compare mounts next time we fish together.  I'm finished with my Grand Jury activities now so I can fish just about any day but I prefer week days.
