Hi,

Disclaimers:  I'm a relative newbie/lurker but read this board almost daily and have made several text posts.  Due to state worker furloughs, and my own possible layoff this year, I've not yet purchased my hobie sport, but that's the one I'm gonna get and I have almost saved enough.  I hope to have one by June.  Oh yeah, last disclaimer.  I live in L.A.

Today I was up visiting my daughter, a student at San Jose State, and wanted to scout a location I read about on this board that would be relatively close to campus where I could bring my yak, once I buy it, when I come to see her.  We drove out to Alviso Marina County Park to scout it out this morning.

I recall reading in a previous post that they were making some improvements.  I took my camera and took some pix and talked to folks and it looks really good.   They're building a boat ramp and improving the parking, but the lot is closed right now.   Workers on site told me that they should finish that boat ramp in about 30 days. (Not sure if that is really accurate.)  It's going to be really nice and should be done soon.

Right now it looks like you can put a boat in by making a portage over the dike at the old marina (gravel).  People there told me that is how most kayakers currently put in at the site.  I took some pix of that too.  Those pix are the ones that show the small gate and "public shore" sign and the old Marina.  Hope you like the pix and I can't wait until I can hook up with some folks on this board on my next trip up to San Jose -- with my NEW hobie sport.

Welcome to the MADNESS Dave.  Good choice on the Hobie Sport!  It's my very first Hobie before the Outback, Pursuit, and Outfitter.

I ride by there on Amtrak/ Capitol Corridor and thought that might be an interesting place to explore.   Is there a bike path that leads to or from it?  If you came by train you could get off at the Great America stop, a few miles away.   I suppose if you wanted to board the train with a Hobie, you could point to the pedals and tell the conductor it was a bicycle :).

While we were there scouting the place on Monday AM, the Amtrack (which one?) went zooming by.  I know one of the BART trains stops close to eBay which is not that far away.

-- an an unrelated topic -- today I flew up and back to Sacramento from LAX ... it was "severe clear" and I could see all these places folks write about on this board as we came into SMF.   Kinda hard to take a yak on a southwest flight though.

You've got to be kidding. The closest that BART comes to Alviso is at least 15 miles away in central Fremont. And you'll never be allowed to board with a kayak, if it were even physically possible.

Cool...I look forward to this launch opening.  It's a very short drive from my place at Lawrence & Tasman.  :smt003

Hi Yakers:

I worked a few  years in Alviso and, it's really a Dump for San Jose. I don't think San Jose will spend much Money to Dredge. Not much in Alvise, except a lot of Memories and, displacement of the long time Home owners in favor of re-development.
Alviso is also San Joses' flood Zone. :smt044

The county is hot to build a stadium in that area....with a team comes desire to spruce the place up.  There will be money to dredge....whether there's fish left after they dredge it enough to run a ferry through there will be another story :smt001
