Looking at my McClane's Field Guide to Saltwater Fishes I'm guessing Petrale Sole.

The eyes are on the wrong side for a sand dab.  California Halibut and Petrale Sole can have the right side eyes.  The body color is much more even and lighter than a California Halibut.  The lateral line looks pretty gradual over the pectoral fin.  I am with Fishin-Jay, Petrale Sole.

Now comes the question.  What did he bite on and where is the video!  :smt003

I've had a 350 pound skunk on my back, and it's hard to motivate to report...  (I know, I'm a crybaby)   :smt003

Near Elk River mouth.  Fishfinder's down, so I don't know the temp...  I was dragging a ball of shrimp around trying for perch.

i think the ID has some serious ramifications for AOTY.  If that's a petrale sole, then its a federal groundfish and out of season!

I think we'll call it a flathead sole so it can count  :smt002

Damn!  My first fish for 2009 AOTY and I'm already in hot water!   :smt010

I'll give this thread more time for a positive ID from a certified fishgeek, and I may have to delete my AOTY entry.

I'm pretty sure it was a sand sole (not a protected groundfish).  Quick question for you Erik... was the eyed side of the fish rough or smooth?
