I recently got re-united with mine and I wonder if it would be wise to completely seal the drain plug? It's located in the worse place possible = right on the water line :smt011

Any thoughts on this issue?

Ive thought about this myself. Ive left the drain out once, not fun. The only time I have ever used the drain is when Id scrub out the inside.

This applies to newer models as well. Mine is a 2008, I think, and the drain plug is at, or below, the water line. I haven't talked myself into sealing it yet, but the conversation continues  :smt002

Maybe couple wraps of teflon tape to make sure there is a super tight waterproof seal but if neeed can be opened.

How difficult would it be to create a new drain hole on the top side? And then seal the bottom drain plug completely.

You can put goop on the old plug and screw it in.  That should seal it up.

Adding a new drain plug is simply drilling a hole for the fitting, riveting and gooping it in place.

I was going to say it would probably be hard to TAP a new hole in a kayak, unless you find a thick enough part of it to get some threads going.  But then a quick search on the net, found this: http://www.austinkayak.com/products/213/Kayak-Drain-Plug-W-Base.html  Seems like a good way to go!

Darn... shiken beat me to the link!   :smt044

Thanks for the link Marv and Al. Looks like I'll be going this route. I think Wilderness Systems should re-think their drain plug location :smt011
