Porky and I hooked up Sun about 8:30 for a run to the buoy.
This was my first time on big blue this year. Woke up to 39 degree temps and ice on my windshield, holy crap!

Porky set a crab trap about 1/2 way between the buoy and wharf. I'll let you explain what if any catch.

Drifted for 'buts for a few hours, nothing but a few by-catch (gophers) that were sent back in good shape.

Great day to be on the water, swell forecast was way off for cap as usual. The NNW swell passed right by and we had sunny calm seas all day.

Good to be back on the water, can't wait till the halibut get in shallower.

Stoggie

Hey Stoggie,

Good times out there, it was absolutely beautiful and no one around, floating in the middle of the ocean, soaking up the sun drfiting for and early Hali. Cant beat it! I felt great after I got off the water..

No Hali's for me, but the dreaded King fish seems to be making a come back in the area. I hadn't dealt with these guys in years, but couldn't get out of them yesterday. There back in full force.

Brought the crab trap, just to mess around and see what critters I could pull up. Got 2 of the creepy ass crabs that look like rocks with kelp growing on them. 2 Mean ass little fish that had a ling type head, and star fish. Nothing great, but lots of fun.

I'll load some pics tonight.

Plan on doing it again soon.

I think it is still a little early for the push to start. They probably won't be shallow for a while. Maybe another month before targeting them is a realistic deal.

Just glad to get back on the water and get my sea legs back.

Glad you guys got out there!!

I was out on a rental skiff on Saturday for my annual birthday drinking (er, fishing) trip with my buddy Erik...  :smt003

Had about the same luck as you guys, but scored two nice RockCrabs for the wife's gumbo...also saw a cool whale spouting between us and the shore and got some excitement when Erik hooked a furbag...  :smt009

Yeah, it was crazy cold in the morning, and the pier was actually icy and slippery on our walk down!!

Sorry for the threadjack...here are a few pics...

Let's get out there on the yaks together soon!!!
 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

Nice report, it's good to hear the latest from the S.C. side of the bay. I bet those unidentified feisty fish were fringeheads. Last year I caught two halibut using small kingfish as live bait within an hour and a half. That's some freebie advice any more and I have to charge you! Just kidding about charging (not about the kingfish, though that's real talk). Keep trying, on the Monterey end of the bay the P.B.s have been landing quite a few halibut already.

That's just what I was thinking, pin those little croakers on & drift 'em! I've caught a few halibut & calicos on live croakers.
Once the swells slow down & things calm a bit I'll bet the flatty's will be there.

Cool, I caught around 30 KF w/Sara on SC pier about 5 weeks ago.  Gonna have to try them for Hali bait!!!
