This is the first year I'm scuba spearfishing.  I hope to do some of that during my abalone trips.

If I first freedive for my abalone, put everything back in car, then suit up for scuba spearfishing, will that be OK?  Am I gonna be getting suspicious looks from other sportsmen, or even nasty visits by the wardens?

I don't see any problems with it.

Just to double check...  I'm confident I should be all legal; just wondering if I'm "within the norm", because I hate to invite attention.

Probably yes. That doesn't mean you would deserve the looks or the visits, but human nature is what it is so yeah you could get some of that unwanted attention.

You ask allot of questions, this site is very open and honest and an excellent resource as you've found out so far, but unless I've missed it which is quite possible, you've never told us anything about yourself.

I do like your screen name,

My dive buddy is scuba cert and I'm not. He likes to scuba after we freedive. You should hook up with us so he has someone to scuba with after we get our abs. I spearfish after I get my abs but I'm freediving.
Everybody dies, not everybody lives. What did you do today?

Of course there is always that danger of a rival site's member coming here to waste NCKA's bandwidth, but rest assured this is not one of them.

I'm just never the "LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME" type of guy; not in class back then and not now.  Plus, I didn't think anyone would care to know.  But since you serve up the opportunity I'm glad to introduce myself.

I've been fishing in waters between Pillar Point and Pigeon Point and abalone "shore-diving" up north for 10+ years, so I'm sure I have seen many NCKA folks out on water.  My open secret hole is Pescadero.  I think the place produces simply because most boats don't want to make the journey down there, but I do in order to guarantee success.

Last year the last big one escaped and I said to myself "that's it, I'm going down to get them."  I signed up for scuba diving class and got certified.

But since learning to dive, I've paid more attention to the sharkiness issue of the red triangle and now I'm afraid of sharks (I wasn't before since I've never seen a shark out there all these years).  I'm still trying to figure out how I can dive in the waters of Pescadero (stay shallow? hide in kelp beds? shark shield? bring a cage?).  I hope I can figure out a way, since I know Pescadero holds huge fish.  It's gonna be awesome spearfishing there.  My personal record of a 28 lb halibut is from there.

Meanwhile, while participating in spearfishing forum here, I'm exposed to kayak fishing and I find that interesting too.  To say the least it can mean a comfortable car ride down to Pescadero instead of a bumpy boat ride.  That is VERY appealing.  I think I will get a kayak and just try it out.

So that's my fishing story.  If I haven't satisfied your curiosity, feel free to fire away.

Thanks for the intro,

I started ab diving, scuba diving, and spearing all in the same year (a long time ago), I've let the scuba skills slide away with time, and will probably never get back to it,

But for you, that's great, I don't think there are many things I'v done that is as much fun as spearing fish, Go for it, but be safe,,,,,
