Went out to Ano Nuevo on my dads Whaler. Right when we got there we hit the biggest school of blue ive ever seen. We nearly limited out in about 15 minutes on the blues using small Diamond Bars. We moved into deeper water and caught a nice ling about 15 lbs, another ling about 10 lbs then the 3rd small ling. Moved into shallower water and picked up a nice cabby for our limit. We started filleting our fish and then all of a sudden we see a huge swirl, then there he was, a couple feet smaller then my dads 17ft whaler. He swam around and looked at our drift chute then swam away. We hung out for a while and then we see the 2nd great white, as big if not bigger than our boat, he only stayed for a few minutes. Then came number 3, he came right up to the boat and under it, his tail got snagged on the drift chute roap a little and he freaked out, splashed around and dove down to the depths. Weather was great, sunny all day. A nice ride back to the harbor.

Yesterday 2 reports of lings snatched at the boat by gw's. Coastside has had about a report a week of "gw took the fish by the boat". This has been going on consistently for about the second half of the season, definitely a new pattern

I'm thinking about doing a little informal survey there of how many times this happened this year, I think it's a new phenom with the gw's being trained by shark research boats to find food by the boats, could be wrong about that, but there's a reason they tell us not to feed the bears. At Farralons they use surfboards as lures.

The flipside is that the there are some surf-related sponsors for the Pelagic Research guys, so maybe they're trying to figure out what the sharks don't go for or something, that would be nice

I think they need to make GW fishing legal again. I could do with a few less of them myself.

I only got some pics of there dorsel fins and tails sticking up out of the water, but the only camera i had was a disposable. The smallest one was about the size of the one in the pick, maybe a little smaller.

gee great Bluekayak, in the future don't listen to these guys wanting to see pictures. I have the ebie gebies now. I was crabbing with Chuck last week and I watched my fish finder go from 40' to 2' feet, thought it was a malfunction and then it went from 4' to 40'. Getting a little more spooked, I radioed to chuck. He just laughed(of course he was quite a ways in front of me. It did the same thing one more time before I finally caught up to him. then a few minutes later, his FF did the same thing. It was a little unnerving, but we never saw anything. I am sure that is because I refused to look to hard. After seeing that picture, I know what I am looking for, but am quite sure I don't want to see it. I guess Thanks for the pics.............. :smt017

In a Boston Whaler that would be exciting to see in a kayak it would be plain terrifying. Nice pic though. Thanks for sharing

DAMN.... that's my worst fear in using a drift chute from a kayak!

Call me chicken but I'm definitely adding a 12 gauge flare gun to the topside equipment
You can call me chicken too... but I think that's brilliant idea.  The flare gun can be used as an emergency signaling device as well as for protection. :smt072

I would pay half the coast of the gas needed by a boat to go down to Ano Nuevo for a shark show. So, if any of the boaters on this board would like to take an extra passenger - PLEASE send me a PM. I'm very eager to see a GW first hand and take tons photos.
