8.8 magnitude earthquake offshore Chile has generated a tsunami.  Estimated arrival time in our area is just after 1pm.

Wave heights have been generally < 5 feet, but everyone out fishing today should be aware and alert.

Too early to call 2010 the year of the earthquake?

Quote
... A tsunami advisory is in effect which includes the
coastal areas of California - Oregon - Washington - British
Columbia and Alaska from the California-Mexico border to
   Attu Alaska...

Persons in tsunami advisory areas should move out of the
water... off the beach and out of harbors and marinas.

Tsunami advisories mean that a tsunami capable of producing
strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near
water is imminent of expected. Significant widespread inundation
is not expected for areas in an advisory. Tsunamis are a series of
waves potentially dangerous several hours after initial arrival
time. Estimated times of initial wave arrival for selected
sites in the advisory are provided below.

Curious how this would affect the delta tides, if at all.  Anyone?

The delta is quite far from the ocean.  I'd imagine that it would not be noticeably affected at all, either by causing a sudden drop or rise in water levels or changing the timing of high and low tide.

I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure you will be just fine in the delta.

My mom and sister were evacuated this morning from Captain Cook which is south of Kona on the Big Island.  Last thing I heard was that the ocean was being sucked out and all the coral was suddenly exposed.

Got stuck in the "tsunami" at HMB.  Thought my ankles might get wet.  I was in the harbor and watched the water rise maybe a foot or more.  It came and went in less than a minute.

Did see a bunch o idiots fishing the breakwater while it happened.

Do they have to pay for the cost of their rescue?

Anyway pretty cool to see.
