ran down to pescadero with dr. d and tommy trouble for four lings, a cab and a half dozen rockfish.  really frustrating.  i was marking fish everywhere, but most had a bad case of lockjaw.  ted managed to stick a nice ling, but tom was having a little trouble with the camera....

then he had more trouble with the camera....

and finally i took a shot.

an 18 pound hog!  notice the flat water.  it was actually too calm, to the point that i was toying with the idea of firing up the engine to get a drift going.

i don't know why the bite was off.  maybe it was the full moon.  maybe someone left a banana on the boat.  maybe the weekend will be better for you guys.  good luck!

pescadero is 15 miles south of half moon bay.  this ling was picked up using a small blue as bait.  mostly we were using frozen anchovies.

nice ling, crazy but some of those flat days, you wish for wind!

when do the anchovies leave (or do they?)?

same day, a little further south, nothing hit bait for me, but lures did the trick.  I saw a lot of smelt.  maybe the fish wanted something other than the frozen anvhovies. however, I tried frozen 6 inch kingfish. no luck on those. Also frozen squid, and it was barely touched.

maybe the lack of action on the bait was the issue. flat calm, no drift, no scent trail from the bait moving through the water, no action from the waves either.

When it is that calm, you can cast a swimbait out and cover some ground. This seems to be one of the few times swimbaits can outperform iron: shallower water, calm air, finicky fish.
