So I posted a couple fish almost 2 weeks ago and I look at the AOTY leader board and I am still at the top!  :smt102

Can someone please say this contest was only ment to last for January  :smt005  :smt044

Looks like I won't be able to get out for at least 2 weeks due to Super bowl and Valentines Day I hope some of you take advantage of this time.

Anyway it's late and this may be the last time I can brag about being at the lead for AOTY.  :smt004

Speaking from experience, albeit from the old format, it is not how you start but how you finish.  Most people are lying dormant during the winter doldrums but as soon as the weather turns nice and the ocean opens up, you'll be out of the top ten in no time. :smt003   The last couple of years I jumped out to a lead and watched it evaporate by April or May because I spend so little time on the ocean.

Although it will be interesting this year with the new set-up as you don't have to spend a day on the ocean to catch 10 fish.  Guarantee you that if winner manages to pull that off, there will be major discontent.

Does it feel like you have a big target on your back though Eric? :smt005 :smt005 I hope you take that first place all the way.

There already is. 66" sturgeon = 198 points but 56" WSB = 280 points. 40" salmon, halibut, or lingcod = 200 points each. If you play cards you know which card holds the highest value. In the AOTY deck of cards many now hold the same value that do not correlate to their real world value.....but it is clear which fish was made to be the ace.

I'll keep fishing for my 3 point fish, the lowest value in AOTY, because that's what I want in the freezer. But I hope to make some trips to Reno.....I mean Monterey.....to catch an ace. At least 'they' didn't make the *#!%#@ bluegill the ace.

Good luck to everybody.  :smt004

Hey now! Congrats Eric. That’s got to be a pretty good feeling. I think this makes you AOTM (angler of the month). Every year I tell myself that I need to start early and do as much freshwater fishing as possible…because come May 1st, it’s all saltwater. But you did it, you’re in 1st, and you deserve it bro!

I really think the Sturgeon deserves more credit,
However my goal is a 16"+ Crappie  :smt003 (and I know where he is).

Remember who started the smack talk. Remember who changed the rules. Another correlation?  I'll keep fishing for my 3 point fish, the lowest value in AOTY, because that's what I want in the freezer. Here's an idea, don't participate.  Or better yet, set out to fix it.  B-ing & M-ing about it does no good.

Agreed!

Oh, I thought the rules were changed to increase participation? Now you're telling me to not participate?
For something to need fixing it has to be broken so I'm glad you're inferring that the new rules are 'broken'. I agree with you.
My complaints are just as valid as all the complaints from previous years re: the old rules. You know.....the complaints from the B-ers & the M-ers that got the rules changed to what they are now.

Very appropriate..... the thread title is. jim

Ben,
Would love to hit the Smallies but this is the only Football game I have gotten to watch all year.  :smt012

FWIW - I have cought many large Smallies in the Stanislas South of Manteca (Sturgeon Bend) and my personal best 7.5lbs at Tulloch.

Good Luck.

Game doesn't start till 3:30, plenty of time to fish!  :smt003  I'm in serious need of help catching something other than trout :smt012 so my goal is to try for bass *somewhere* on Sunday.  And when done, i'll watch what ever is left of the game ;)

Hey way to go, I keep looking for more reports and I keep reading skunks here and there.  They are starting to look like the few reports I posted last year. to you brave souls out there my hat is off to you and I am green with envy. April is coming (end of school! wahoo!).  then I am off and running hoping to catch some sort of Northern California fish, hell any fish for that matter.
