I have an Omer Excaliber 2000 82cm gun.  Does anyone know how to take apart an Omer style speargun?  I want to access my trigger for cleaning/lubing and maybe replacing the plastic line release with a stainless one.  I am thinking of just machining a new stainless release to replace the plastic one for piece of mind.  Although I have not had trouble with it, it seems like a weak link on an otherwise good gun.

I emailed Omer, but have not heard back.

Anyone else do any cool modifications to their guns?

Thanks, Matt

Post the question on spearboard and you will probably get an answer.
Everybody dies, not everybody lives. What did you do today?

Don't mess with it.  The plastic line release is more than strong enough and you really don't need to lube anything.  Just a good rinse & use it.  If sand is in the mech, you could dismantle it by popping the pins out... but I highly discourage it otherwise. I've had Omer mechs for years with no problems - just a quick rinse after a dive & sometimes not even that.

As for other cool mods, the basic ones for that gun are open muzzle, installing a track, &/or adding a reel.  You could also paint it or add a patch of reflective tape to it.  None are necessary as the gun is really nicely balanced stock and if you're not careful, you'll introduce new variables that actually harm performance.

I know it's the down season, but put some good time in with your gun till you can use it to the best of it's abilities.  THEN consider upgrading stuff.  There are so e guns I'd say go ahead & tinker, but that isn't one if em.

Thanks Ambhibian, I did and got a contact from the Omer rep.  I just have to punch out the pins to access the assembly.  I will follow Fuzz's advise however and leave it alone.  I would hate to screw it up.

I did move the shaft support closer to the handle.  I read that Omer recommends that for better accuracy?  Mine was set up toward the mid point on the gun this last season. A full rail is a tempting modification.  I saw a guy had a full fish decoy on the muzzle of his gun!  :smt005  Funny as it was, it did seem to work....

I am going to order some of the euro muzzle adapters so I can tie my own bands and some dyneema for the wishbones.  35 dollars for a new set of bands is a little spendy and i like having a spare with me on long trips.  I will probably stay with the 16mm bands, as it is just a reef gun.  I will smooth the stock shaft slots for the dyneema.

I definately need to find a spot to shoot some fish targets and practic shots.  Unfortunately spearfishing is illegal in Tehama and Shasta counties.  I don't want to try an explain target practice in the local lakes.  I wish I has access to a good pool.  I just have a dough boy, and I can see the shaft going right through it! lol, maybe with a good backdrop.  I am sure the wife would understand!

Thanks guys.  Matt
